Excerpt from Reports of Cases Decided in the High Court of Chancery of Maryland, Vol. 1 ON receiving the appointment of Chancellor, I determined to make every effort to acquire a competent' knowledge of the peculiar principles and practice of the Court of Chancery of Maryland, to which my attention had been so rarely drawn, and for which I had had, for many years in the judicial stations I previously held, so little use. Upon inquiry I soon found, that any thing like an accurate know ledge of those peculiarities was only to be gathered from the records themselves; to which I therefore resorted, and after a careful perusal noted the course of proceeding, and occasionally made short digests of such cases as appeared most likely to be useful thereafter. In this way I collected a considerable mass of information, which has greatly facilitated my official labours. The design is, to publish, in consecutive volumes, all the more important cases decided since the Qist of December, 1846, (the date of the appointment of the present Chancellor, ) until the time, when, by virtue of the provisions of the New Constitution, this Court shall cease to exercise its functions. The cases embraced in the present volume, were originally reported for, and printed in, The Mary land Free Press, a newspaper published at An napolis. They have been arranged and revised by the Chancellor; and notes have been carefully pre pared to each, with a more full and complete index to the volume than has yet been made to any of the Maryland Reports. Excerpt from Reports of Cases Decided in the High Court of Chancery of Maryland, Vol. 3 The Legislature of Maryland has manifested its high appreciation of the labors of Chancellor Johnson, by subscribing for one hundred and ninety copies of these Reports, as will appear by the following Act of Assembly of January Session, 1853, chap. 263. The same appropriation was made, also by a nearly unanimous vote, for the first and second volumes of this work, at the Session of 1852. "An Act to purchase Copies of the Third Volume of Maryland Chancery Decisions, for the use of the Courts of each County, and for the benefit of the State Library. Passed May 24, 1853. "Sect. 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the State Librarian is hereby authorized to purchase one hundred and ninety copies of the third volume of the Maryland Chancery Decisions, published by James Wingate, to be distributed by said Librarian as the Reports of the Court of Appeals are distributed. "Sect. 2. And be it enacted, That said volume of Maryland Chancery Decisions shall not contain less than six hundred pages, and that the price, to the State, of said volume, shall be five dollars per volume. "Sect. 3. And be it enacted, That upon the presentation of the receipt of the State Librarian, that said volumes have been delivered to the State Library, the Comptroller of the Treasury shall issue his warrant to the Treasurer to pay said James Wingate for the said Maryland Chancery Decisions, at the rate of five dollars for each and every volume purchased.
