Book Description
Excerpt from Report on Jute Culture: And the Importance of the Industry Heretofore the agriculture of the South has been restricted to the pro duction of a very few staples. This narrow limitation of southern industry is an essentially false policy. The South has made the grave mistake of confining its activities almost exclusively to one pursuit. But no country can realize its highest possibilities of material greatness by following a single employment. The urgent need of the South to day is a wide range of industries. It ought to superadd manufactures to a larger variety of agricultural productions. Then the competition of the different occupations would impart activity to business, give more employment to labor, create better local markets, raise the price of a gri cultural and manufactured products, increasing the profits of workmen. Book Description
Excerpt from A Report on the Culture of Hemp and Jute in the United States: With Statements Concerning the Practice in Foreign Countries, the Preparation of the Fiber for Market, and Remarks on the Machine Question It is not necessary to go into details regarding the varieties of hemp. Several are grown in this country, that cultivated in Kentucky, and having a hollow stem, being the most common. China hemp, with slender stems, growing very erect, has a wide range of culture. Smyrna hemp is adapted to cultivation over a still wider range, and Japanese hemp is beginning to be cultivated, particularly in California, where it reaches a height of 15 feet.1 Russian and Italian seed have been experimented with, but the former produces a short stalk, while the latter only grows to a medium height. A small quantity of Piedmont ese hemp seed from Italy was distributed by the Department in 1893, having been received through the Chicago Exposition, but it failed to germinate, as doubtless the seed was too old. Book Description
Excerpt from Pitman's Common Commodities and Industries Series: The Jute Industry, From Seed to Finished Cloth The sub-title of this little volume indicates that prac tically all the processes involved in 'the cultivation of jute plants, the extraction of the fibre, and the trans formation of the fibre into useful commodities, have been considered. In addition, every important branch of this wide industry is liberally illustrated, and the description, although not severely technical, is suffi ciently so to enable students, or those with no previous knowledge of the subject, to follow the operations intelligently, and to become more or less acquainted with the general routine of jute manufacture. As a matter of fact, the work forms a medium of study for textile students, and a suitable introduction to the more detailed literature by the authors on these textile subjects.
