Grenada has made significant strides to counter climate change but meeting the daunting remaining challenges will require domestic policy actions and sustained international support. Climate change is an existential threat to Grenada. Increasing frequency and intensity of coastal storms threatens infrastructure and livelihoods, as do increased risk of coastal flooding and drought. Notably, Hurricane Ivan in 2004 caused damages of over 200 percent of GDP. Grenada has recognized this by placing climate resilience at the center of its policy making and forging strategic alliances with key global climate finance providers. However, the challenges facing the country remain daunting and will require large increases in international support, both financial and technical, to assist the Grenadian authorities turn their impressive resilience plans into action.

The Third Third Annual Project Steering Committee Meeting of the GEG/FAO Climate Change Adaptation in the Eastern Caribbean Fisheries Sector Project (CC4FISH) was held at UN House, Bridgetown, Barbados, 16–17 April 2019. The meeting brought together 24 representatives from the project countries, partner organizations and other key stakeholders involved in the delivery of the project to highlight the progress made to date by each partner. Project countries and partners presented a review of their activities carried out during 2018 and their annual workplans and budgets for 2019. The discussions included the need and road to ensure a timely delivery of the project outcomes. In addition there were discussions on lessons learned and opportunities for further development of the project to ensure increased resilience and reduction of vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Eastern Caribbean fisheries sector. The main topics discussed during the workshop included capacity building, sargassum impacts, aquaculture development, fisheries management plans, vulnerability assessments and communication.

Socio-economic monitoring (SocMon) in Grenada commenced in late May 2008 with a training workshop in the east coast town of Grenville, the site selected for the project. SocMon Grenada was part of a regional project Socio-economic monitoring by Caribbean Fishery Authorities (Fisheries SocMon) funded by a US Coral Reef Conservation grant for and jointly implemented by the Center for Resource Management and Environmental Studies (CERMES) of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM). Grenada opted to participate in this project because of the perception at the Fisheries Division that certain east coast communities were impacting on coastal ecosystems in a manner that was likely to negatively affect the quality of life of those communities over time. The survey site, which is located along the east coast of mainland Grenada encompasses nine villages and one town. Within the site there are a variety of coastal resources which impact and are impacted upon mostly by adjoining communities. These resources include the sea itself, coral reefs, seagrass communities, beaches, mangroves wetlands and typical coastal vegetation. Human utilization include s sand mining, charcoal production, fishing and agriculture (both plant and animal husbandry)
