The former almost always come along with the more desirable economic species whether ornamentals are desired or not. However, in Puerto Rico the extension Of ornamental plantings throughout the island has been an important part of the tourist program undertaken in recent years. Another, and perhaps more direct commercial value, lies in supplying such species to Puerto Rican nurserymen for intensive propagation for the florist trade on the mainland. Frequent requests for such plants are received, and in this way the 12-month growing temperature Of the island is turned into an appreciable asset. The Division of Plant Exploration and Introduction of the Bureau Of Plant Industry sent to the station an interesting lot Of sample fruit plants consisting Of 10 species and varieties Of the raspberry and blackberry genus, Rubus. Additional planting material Of a fruit tree, the Philippine mabola persimmon (diospyros discolorl Willd.) was received from the same agency. While this species has been rep resented in the plant-introduction gardens for many years by a well formed vigorous tree, it has been impossible to propagate it rapidly, for it is the uncommon form with fruits almost always seedless. Excerpt from Report of the Puerto Rico Agricultural Experiment Station, 1932 A test was made to determine the difference in yield of oil from mature and from immature leaves. A charge of 550 pounds of leaves and 300 gallons of water, when distilled for hours, yielded about 60 gallons of distillate. The mature leaves yielded 0 cubic centimeters of oil, and the immature leaves, cubic centimeters. Probably the use of tender, young leaves would have given a still greater difference. Excerpt from Report of the Federal Experiment Station in Puerto Rico, 1950 A higher yield was obtained from plantings Spaced 3 feet between plants, in rows 4 feet apart, than with the other planting distances tried. Plantings in May gave the highest yield, and the plants were more vigorous. During the dry season the plants did not reach nor mal height, and production was low. Plantings made at the lowest elevation (80 feet above sea level) gave best results. A planting at Las Mesas (about 900 feet above sea level) gave fair results, and at Toro Negro (about feet above Sea level) the plants were seriously stunted and consequently gave very low yields. Although the trees present a great bulk to hurricane winds of high velocity, experience in the East Indies has shown that even when blown over they seldom die. Logical regional planning would seem to indicate that mangoes could more safely be grown in some of our steep-sided valleys where they may attain some degree of protection from hurricane winds. Producers' cooperatives seem important for such new crops. The profitable production of truck crops for winter marketing is dependent upon the most competent technical knowledge for field management as well as alert representation in the continental markets. The production of other crops has shown the necessity of increased technical knowledge. The small producers of Puerto Rico individually have not been in a position to have market representation or obtain through experience the technical knowledge necessary for successful truck-crop or other specialized production. In this situation it would seem essential to form cooperative associations in which technical men would be employed to guide production methods, packing, and ship ping, as well as provide expert market representation.
