Book Description
Excerpt from Report of the Richmond, Indiana, Survey for Vocational Education, 1916, Vol. 3 of 15: Conducted Co-Operatively by the Indiana State Board of Education, the Board of Education of Richmond and Indiana University In February, 1913, the Indiana Vocational Education Law - recommended by the teachers and superintendents of the state and by the Special Commission on Industrial Education appointed two years previously to investigate Indiana's need for vocational training - was passed by the Legislature. A Deputy State Superintendent in charge of vocational work, and a Special Agent to supervise agricultural education were appointed by the State Board of Education the following May. As the sections of the law providing for state-aided vocational schools did not go into effect until September of the following year, the first year was devoted to a study of the problems involved in the organization and conduct of the special vocational schools to be established, and to developing the instruction in industrial arts, agriculture and domestic science, which the law prescribed should be taught in all the schools of the state as a part of their regular course of instruction. During the first year vocational schools in all parts of the country were visited and the experiments made in vocational education in different cities and states carefully studied. One conviction which this study of the problem left in our minds was that most of the cities and states which had organized vocational instruction were, in reality, not stressing the occupations in which the majority of their people were engaged and that all the vocational schools visited seemed more or less handicapped by the fact that no careful analyses of the major industries had been made to provide the data needed to make an effective course of study. We also became keenly aware of the fact that the Indiana situation presented some problems that were distinctly unique and new. In other words, we began to see that a careful and systematic study of Indiana's specific needs for vocational training would have to be made and the more important industries of the state analyzed before the problem of providing vocational training for the people of the state could be effectively and economically solved. As a result steps were immediately taken and plans formulated for making such vocational surveys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids including a PowerPoint presentation for each chapter. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.

Book Description
Excerpt from Final Report, 1917, Vol. 2: Description of Surveying Marks and Monuments Used Nearly all the marks and monuments herein described have been set by the engineers of the United States Geological Survey, and the officials of that organization have rendered every assistance in publishing the volume, includ ing reading the proof, and engraving and printing the three maps it contains. Also the officers of the Corps of Engineers, United States Army; of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey; and of cities and railroads within the State, have supplied all available data in their possession, that was perti nent. The U. 5. Coast and Geodetic Survey has kindly furnished the electro plates for the table inserted in pocket on the back cover of this volume. The State employees who have assisted in the work are Mr. Gabriel Weber, who, assisted by Mr. G. J. Militante, prepared Maps 1 and 2 in pocket for en graving; Prof. W. D. Tumbull, who lent assistance at various stages of the work; and Miss Hazel Harris, who assisted in the preparation of the material for publication, and assisted Mr. Weber in proof-reading the entire work. I desire here to acknowledge the faithful and efficient service of all. Altho this volume includes all the information relative to the surveying marks and monuments used in completing the field work, two more volumes will be needed to present the remaining material made available by the survey. Provision was made for these two volumes in the Sundry Appropriation bill by the General Assembly finance committees, but unfortunately on the last day of the session, last Tuesday, the entire bill was defeated. It is to be hoped that the Emergency Board will make provision for the publication of the two remaining volumes while the material may yet be most easily prepared and presented. Book Description
A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
