Presents findings and recommendations of a British Columbia committee appointed to report on matters respecting the remuneration, allowances, and benefits of judges, and to consider ways by which judicial remuneration levels might be established in the future (other than those ways set out in the Provincial Court Act). Begins with an overview of issues related to judicial independence and a review of processes used other jurisdictions for setting and reviewing judicial compensation. This is followed by a review of the current compensation system in British Columbia and its defect. Concludes with recommendations for amendments to the Provincial Court Act. Appendices include the 1988 Ontario Provincial Courts Committee summary on judicial independence and the Ontario Frameworks Agreement covering various aspects of the relationship between the government and provincial judges with regard to their judicial independence.
