The ice program conducted by the Naval Oceanographic Office principally in support of DEEP FREEZE 66 Antarctic operations is presented in this report. Methods of data collection and dissemination, ice forecasting, and various allied ice projects are discussed. A summary of ice conditions in the Ross Sea and McMurdo Sound is given graphically for the period October through December 1965. Ice concentrations were near normal during the DEEP FREEZE 66 operation but were somewhat heavier than those experienced during DEEP FREEZE 65, especially during the first half of the season. Rapid disintegration of the ice during late November resulted in nearly ice free conditions in the Ross Sea by mid-December. McMurdo Sound remained congested until mid-January because of persistent northerly winds which prevented the ice from drifting northward into warmer waters. (Author).

The literature search was conducted in order to determine the amount and type of reliable antarctic ice data available and to tabulate the distribution and characteristics of these data. In this search, approximately 900 bibliography cards were examined. Of these 900 cards, about 400 sources were evaluated, and some 45 were tabulated.
