Book Description
Excerpt from Report on the Progress of the State Geological Survey of Michigan Presented, 1871: Presented to the State Geological Board, Nov. 22, 1870 Chapter four is devoted to Dimensions. After furnishing the different lengths of degrees of longitude and latitude within the State, with intervals of space corresponding to one minute and one second of time, a' table of air-line distances between the principal points of the State is given, and then a complete list of all the islands belonging to the State which exceed one one-hundredth of a square mile in area. It is found that the number of these islands is 179, with a total area of acres. Chapter five is devoted to an exposition of the system of survey of the public lands. The inaccuracies incident to the system are noticed - both those which are inherent and those which are casual. The more important provisions of the State laws in reference to surveys are cited; and a brief account is given of the origin and character of the old territorial patents, whose lines are unconformable with those of the United States surveys. The sixth chapter consists of a table of areas of the several townships of the State, from the records of the Land Othee at Lansing. These are arranged by counties and towns. Appended is a table of areas of the islands of the State, with an indica tion of the counties to which they severally belong. Book Description
Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Park Commission of the City of Allegheny: January 1st, 1870 In September of last year, your Commissioners visited the cities of Philadelphia, New York, Brook lyn, Baltimore, and Washington, for the purpose of inspecting the Parks of those cities. The value of this trip cannot be too highly estimated, and, without attempting to burden this Report with details, it is safe to say that all of the visiting members came back with more enlarged views and liberal ideas as to the proper treatment of our Park Grounds. The governing object of the trip was, in effect, to profit by the experience of other cities, instead of pursu ing the fogyish idea of learning everything at the expense of failures. In relation to the manner of constructing walks, and on the subject of drainage and ornamentation, the time and money spent is as nothing in value to the information received. Day, who had been teacher of this department since its Commencement in October, 1867. The largest number in attendance was 61. Miss Day conducted the school with her usual success and although regretting it, yet none could blame her for resigning this fora more eligible situation. Miss Day had admirable tact in managing the little folks, and her scholars loved her. She was succeeded by katie F. George, who kept the fall and winter terms, commencing Aug. 31, and ending Dec. 31. Under her tuition the school made good progress and did much credit to both teacher and pupils at the closing examination; at which time all in the first class were advanced to the intermediate department. Book Description
Excerpt from The Church in Wales: Report of a Paper Read Before the Church Institution, July 6, 1870 In tracing the progress of the Church in Wales during the last forty years, it will be impossible within the limits of this paper to go into details of the work done in all the four Dioceses, and as one Diocese was selected as a specimen of neglect and abuse, per haps it will be only fair if I take the same Diocese, and show what has been done in it since 1831.
