Book Description
Biography of Howard Aiken, a major figure of the early digital era, by a major historian of science who was also a colleague of Aiken's at Harvard. Howard Hathaway Aiken (1900-1973) was a major figure of the early digital era. He is best known for his first machine, the IBM Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator or Harvard Mark I, conceived in 1937 and put into operation in 1944. But he also made significant contributions to the development of applications for the new machines and to the creation of a university curriculum for computer science. This biography of Aiken, by a major historian of science who was also a colleague of Aiken's at Harvard, offers a clear and often entertaining introduction to Aiken and his times. Aiken's Mark I was the most intensely used of the early large-scale, general-purpose automatic digital computers, and it had a significant impact on the machines that followed. Aiken also proselytized for the computer among scientists, scholars, and businesspeople and explored novel applications in data processing, automatic billing, and production control. But his most lasting contribution may have been the students who received degrees under him and then took prominent positions in academia and industry. I. Bernard Cohen argues convincingly for Aiken's significance as a shaper of the computer world in which we now live.

Book Description
The decision to learn to draw and paint invariably brings up a lot of questions for the beginner. "What medium should I try? What materials will I need? How do I make the first marks on a blank sheet of paper?" The most important question of all, of course, is: "Do I have any artistic talent?" In this book Mike Chaplin answers all those questions and more, ranging from basic markmaking with drawing tools, watercolors, pastels, and oils to tackling complicated subjects such as perspective in an easily comprehensible way. Which media you eventually decide you want to use the most will depend on your own temperament and your preferred style of working, but all have something special to bring to a subject and your art will greatly benefit from trying them all. Meanwhile, Mike's accessible style of teaching will demonstrate to you that you can indeed draw and paint through learning the necessary techniques in a simple and structured way. A member of the prestigious Royal Watercolour Society of Great Britain, Mike Chaplin combines a notable career in art with communicating his knowledge and enthusiasm to artists in workshops in the UK and internationally.

Book Description
While literally hundreds of books exist on the subject of "cartographic" maps, The Art of Illustrated Maps is the first book EVER to fully explore the world of conceptual, "imaginative" mapping. Author John Roman refers to illustrated maps as "the creative nonfiction of cartography," and his book reveals how and why the human mind instinctively recognizes and accepts the artistic license evoked by this unique art form. Drawing from numerous references, The Art of Illustrated Maps traces the 2000-year history of a specialized branch of illustration that historians claim to be "the oldest variety of primitive art." This book features the dynamic works of many professional map artists from around the world and documents the creative process as well as the inspirations behind contemporary, 21st-century illustrated maps.
