Book Description
In both Vasari's life and in his Lives, prints played important roles. This volume examines Giorgio Vasari's interest, as an art historian and as an artist, in engravings and woodblock prints, revealing how it sheds light on aspects of Vasari's career, and on aspects of sixteenth-century artistic culture and artistic practice. It is the first book to study his interest in prints from this dual perspective.

Book Description
First published in 1998, this volume twelve scholars explore ways in which drawings were employed and appreciated in various European Cities form late medieval times, through the Renaissance and Reformation periods and into the early seventeenth century. The essayists examine the relationship between preparatory sketches and finished artworks in more durable and expensive materials, and consider the roles played by various drawing types, such as studies from different kinds of model and student copies from a master’s exemplar. They also investigate how drawings and their mechanically- reproduced equivalents- engravings, etchings and other forms of print – came to be collected for both practical and connoisseurial purposes, and how iconographical and stylistic inventiveness were linked to imaginative artistic interpretations of traditional subjects and to technical innovations in drawing and printmaking. Through diverse approaches to the study of artists’ attitudes and ambitions, the essays in Drawing 1400-1600 offer ways of appreciating the complex and fascinating history of the practice and theory of drawing over two centuries during which the expressive potential of the medium was realized in some of the greatest artistic statements of all time.

Book Description
Drawings by the great Italian Mannerist painter and poet Agnolo Bronzino (1503-1572) are extremely rare. This important and beautiful publication brings together for the first time nearly all of the sixty drawings attributed to this leading draftsman of the 16th century. Each drawing is illustrated in color, discussed in detail, and shown with many comparative photographs. Bronzino's technical virtuosity as a draftsman and his mastery of anatomy and perspective are vividly apparent in each stroke of the chalk, pen, or brush. The younger generations of Florentine artists particularly admired Bronzino for his technical virtuosity as a painter, and Giorgio Vasari praised him for his powers as a disegnatore (designer and draftsman).

Book Description
The pontificate of Clement VII (Giulio de' Medici) is usually regarded as amongst the most disastrous in history, and the pontiff characterized as timid, vacillating, and avaricious. It was during his years as pope (1523-34) that England broke away from the Catholic Church, and relations with the Holy Roman Emperor deteriorated to such a degree that in 1527 an Imperial army sacked Rome and imprisoned the pontiff. Given these spectacular political and military failures, it is perhaps unsurprising that Clement has often elicited the scorn of historians, rather than balanced and dispassionate analysis. This interdisciplinary volume, the first on the subject, constitutes a major step forward in our understanding of Clement VII's pontificate. Looking beyond Clement's well-known failures, and anachronistic comparisons with more 'successful' popes, it provides a fascinating insight into one of the most pivotal periods of papal and European history. Drawing on long-neglected sources, as rich as they are abundant, the contributors address a wide variety of important aspects of Clement's pontificate, re-assessing his character, familial and personal relations, political strategies, and cultural patronage, as well as exploring broader issues including the impact of the Sack of Rome, and religious renewal and reform in the pre-Tridentine period. Taken together, the essays collected here provide the most expansive and nuanced portrayal yet offered of Clement as pope, patron, and politician. In reconsidering the politics and emphasizing the cultural vitality of the period, the collection provides fresh and much-needed revision to our understanding of Clement VII's pontificate and its critical impact on the history of the papacy and Renaissance Europe.
