In 1820, Indianapolis became the state capital of Indiana. The original plan called for a city of only one square mile, at the center of which sat Governor's Circle, a large circular commons that was home to the governor's mansion; however, no Indiana governor ever lived there. The mansion quickly gained a haunted reputation and was eventually demolished in 1857. Today, the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, a 284-foot-tall memorial, stands in its place. This centerpiece was built to commemorate Indiana's Civil War Veterans, as three out of every four eligible Hoosiers served in the war.
