The study included 23 participates [sic], 18 to 22 years old, from Oklahoma City University's (n = 11) and the University of Central Oklahoma's (n = 12) varsity volleyball teams. The subjects' hitting and serving percentages were recorded after each match during their pre-season competition. Once the pre-season was over, the researcher administrated the Coaching Behaviour Scale for Sports (CBS-S) survey which measured perceived coaching behaviors for each athlete in six different categories. A Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationships among all the categories of the survey and the hitting and serving percentages for both schools. The results indicated that there were no significant relationships between the perceived coaching behaviors and the hitting and serving percentages of the collegiate volleyball players from either program."--Abstract.

The researcher sought out to analyze the perceived leadership style of a collegiate coach for an elite level collegiate volleyball program, and how athletes within that program perceive those behaviors. The purpose of the current study was to compare the self-perceived leadership behaviors of a head coach at the collegiate level and compare this self-perception to the athlete’s perception of the coach’s behaviors and leadership style. The Coaching Behavior Score for Sport (CBS-S) was administered to the collegiate student-athletes and support staff members once the season was completed. The self-perceived survey of the Leadership Scale for Sport (LSS) was administered once to only the Head Coach after the season was completed. Results from the LSS showed higher scores in Training and Instruction and Positive Feedback. Results also showed lower scores in Democratic Behavior and Autocratic behavior. The subgroup which was scored around average was Social Support. Results from the CBS-S showed significant scores confirming the coach’s self-perception of leadership in the subscale groups of physical training and conditioning, technical skills, and competitive strategies. The results from the CBS-S and LSS offered a unique finding where the Head Coach the lower end scores in the subgroups Democratic and Autocratic behavior, the CBS-S results showed how the participants perceived the Head Coach higher in the subscale groups Personal Rapport, Goal Setting, and Mental Preparation. These results provide insight into a leader who can achieve a high level of task-oriented behaviors while also being perceived to be athlete oriented.

Abstract: For many coaches, athletes, and sport psychologists, mental toughness is considered to be one of the most essential characteristics athletes must possess in order to be successful in sport. While there is yet to be a consensus on what mental toughness means, the idea that coaches are one of the main influences of mental toughness development in athletes has been supported by many. The purpose of this study was to examine how the coach-athlete relationship can affect mental toughness development in athletes and if coaching behaviors are perceived depending on how athletes view their relationship with their coach. Participants of this longitudinal dual-methods study were 16 female volleyball players from a single NCAA Division II school. Athletes completed a demographic questionnaire, the Mental Toughness Scale (MTS-11), Coach-Athlete Relationship Questionnaire (CART-Q), Coaching Behaviors Scale for Sport (CBS-S), and a total of three different open-ended questions at the pre- and post- season. Pearson r correlation analysis did not find significance between mental toughness and the perceived quality of the coach-athlete relationship; however, there was significance in the relationship between coaching behaviors and the coach-athlete relationship quality. A Paired t-Test analysis also found significant changes in how athletes viewed the quality of the coach- athlete relationships from pre- to post- season. A total of 11 themes were found after a thematic analysis was conducted for the responses to the open-ended questions. This study aimed to explore athletes’ ideal coach-athlete relationship and how this relationship can be achieved to maximize player development and performance.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between perceived coaching behaviors and the changes that occur in college athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy during a season. Additionally, the strength and direction of the relationship between collective efficacy and team cohesion was tested. To test these relationships, a series of questionnaires were administered to 180 collegiate athletes in the early season and late season. Multivariate multiple regression analyses indicated that increases in athletes' perceptions of team cohesion and collective efficacy over the season were positively correlated with perceptions of their coach exhibiting higher levels of democratic behavior, training and instruction, social support, positive feedback (LSS), and positive and informational feedback (CFQ) and lower levels of autocratic behaviors, punishment-oriented feedback, and non-reinforcement/ignoring mistakes. A significant relationship was also found between team cohesion and collective efficacy at the early season and especially at the late season measurement.

The purpose of the current study was first, to examine the relationships between perceived coaching behaviors and their sport commitment level; second, to explore the association between an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation and their sport commitment; third, to investigate whether an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation would be a stronger predictor of their sport commitment, compared to perceived coaching behaviors; and fourth, to find out whether an athlete’s scholarship status would be a determinant of their sport commitment level. One hundred sixty-one Division I collegiate tennis players completed questionnaires of the Revised Leadership Scale for Sport (RLSS), Sport Motivation Scale (SMS), and Sport Commitment Model Scale (SCMS). The results indicated that both perceived coaching behaviors, as well as an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation, were determinants of their sport commitment level. However, the findings did not confirm that an athlete’s level of intrinsic motivation had a stronger influence on their sport commitment, than perceived coaching behaviors. In addition, the amount of scholarship provided to athletes positively contributed to their sport commitment. Based on the results, this study also discussed practical implications as well as provided directions for future research.
