Book Description
This book provides, for the first time, an exhaustive discussion of the Franciscan production of texts of religious instruction during the later medieval period (c. 1210-c. 1550). In eight chapters, it introduces the reader to the most important Franciscan sermon cycles, the Franciscan guidelines for living the life of evangelical perfection, the many Franciscan novice training manuals, the Franciscan catechisms and confession manuals, the Franciscan output of liturgical handbooks, the large number of Franciscan texts containing more wide-ranging forms of religious edification, and Franciscan prayer guides. This book provides medievalists and Renaissance scholars alike with a new tool to assess the intellectual and religious transformations between the thirteenth and the sixteenth century, and contributes to the current re-interpretation of the late medieval pastoral revolution.

Book Description
This collection of essays focuses on rules and observances in medieval monasteries and provides a survey of how the efficacy of religious communities could be ensured. The volume offers a rich variety of perspectives, ranging from the role of paraenetic literature and education, the problem of maintaining obedience and the implementation of reform to the importance of architectural features and the relative merits of the eremitical and the coenobite form of the vita religiosa. While the emphasis is on the history of the Franciscan order between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, articles on other monastic communities provide a comparative approach. The volume gives a closer insight into European research projects and casts light on manifold aspects of monastic rules and observances as "devising forms of communal life."

Book Description
Manuscript 9 of the Biblioteca Storico-Francescana of the Chiesa Nuova in Assisi is an anthology of Franciscan writings in the Occitan language. Since the appearance in 1955 of Ingrid Arthur's ed. of the Occitan version of Bonaventure's bio. of St. Francis, scholars have devoted increasing attention to MS. 9. However, studies of Occitan biblical translations have not dealt with the translations of John XII-XVII found in that manuscript. This work provides an ed. of these passages accomp. by a study of their Vulgate origin among the Spiritual Franciscans. Because of the widespread & growing interest in the manuscript as a whole, this vol. offers a general historical treatment of the religious milieu which spawned the translations & the collection containing them.
