Book Description
In a period of about 20 years, Latin America (LATAM) moved from having highly unstable closed economies ruled by authoritarian regimes, to becoming more democratic, stable and open to investment and trade, attracting by 2020 close to 11% of world total foreign direct investment. In parallel, the region has seen the emergence of large multinational companies (so called multilatinas), which have become true global players. There is still relatively little knowledge about how to manage employees in these countries and there is a need for more research addressing people management problems. In comparison with other world regions, Human Resource Management research on Latin America remains scarce. Focusing on this region, this book seeks to offer a more up to date review of the main developments in HRM and talent management that have recently occurred in Latin America, paying attention to local cultural and institutional factors; illustrate examples of idiosyncratic problems or issues that require approaches to TM that differ significantly from those commonly established in current literature; and describe and reflect on the transfer of Talent Management policies from and to LATAM within the context of local and foreign multinational companies. Talent Management in Latin America updates main HRM topics in Latin America, with a local focus on culture and institutions. It shows the latest state of knowledge on the topic and will be of interest both to researchers, academics, and students in the fields of human resource management, critical management studies, and international business.

Principled Labor Law

Book Description
The gig economy, precarious work, and nonstandard employment have forced labor law scholars to rethink their discipline. Classical remedies for unequal power, capabilities approaches, "third way" market regulation, and laissez-faire all now vie for attention - at least in English. Despite a deep history of labor activism, Latin American scholarship has had scant presence in these debates. This book introduces to an English-language audience another approach: principled labor law, based on Latin American perspectives, using a jurisprudential method focused on worker protection. The authors apply this methodology to the least likely case of labor-protective jurisprudence in the industrialized world: the United States. In doing so, Gamonal and Rosado focus on the Thirteenth Amendment as a labor-protective constitutional provision, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. This book shows how principled labor law can provide a clear and simple method for consistent, labor-protective jurisprudence in the United States and beyond.

Book Description
Along with the fast growing economy, the term "BRICs" was coined to represent the newly emerging countries, Brazil, Russia, India and China. This book shows readers that it is the profound social structural changes in these countries that determine their future, and to a large extent, will shape the socio-economic landscape of the future world.

Book Description
Making use of the theoretical tools of Marxist critical sociology, Ruy Braga proposes an innovative reading of the social history of Brazil – from Fordist populism to the Lulista hegemony – using the ‘politics of the precariat’ as an analytical vector. Braga’s analysis seeks to explain both economic and structural processes (peripheral Fordism, its crisis, the transition to financialised post-Fordism) and the subjective dimension of the proletariat suffering from precarity (the anxiety of the subordinate, the preoccupation of the worker, the plebeian or classist drive of the exploited). At the moment when the plebeian drive is once again stimulating strike activity in the country, underlined by the protests that have recently shaken Brazil, this book impels us to reflect on the limits of the current model of Brazilian development. First published in Portugese as A política do precariado: do populismo à hegemonia lulista by Boitempo Editorial in 2012.

Book Description
Timor-Leste has made impressive progress since its historic achievement of independence in 2002. From the instability that blighted its early years, the fledgling democratic country has achieved strong economic growth and a gradual reinstatement of essential social services. A decade on in 2012, Presidential and Parliamentary elections produced smooth political transitions and the extended UN peacekeeping presence in the country came to an end. But significant challenges remain. This book, a product of the inaugural Timor-Leste Update held at The Australian National University in 2013 to mark the end of Timor-Leste’s first decade as a new nation, brings together a vibrant collection of papers from leading and emerging scholars and policy analysts. Collectively, the chapters provide a set of critical reflections on recent political, economic and social developments in Timor-Leste. The volume also looks to the future, highlighting a range of transitions, prospects and undoubted challenges facing the nation over the next 5–10 years. Key themes that inform the collection include nation-building in the shadow of history, trends in economic development, stability and social cohesion, and citizenship, democracy and social inclusion. The book is an indispensable guide to contemporary Timor-Leste.

Book Description
Drawing on the author’s 45 years of experience in multivariate analysis, Correspondence Analysis in Practice, Third Edition, shows how the versatile method of correspondence analysis (CA) can be used for data visualization in a wide variety of situations. CA and its variants, subset CA, multiple CA and joint CA, translate two-way and multi-way tables into more readable graphical forms — ideal for applications in the social, environmental and health sciences, as well as marketing, economics, linguistics, archaeology, and more. Michael Greenacre is Professor of Statistics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona, Spain, where he teaches a course, amongst others, on Data Visualization. He has authored and co-edited nine books and 80 journal articles and book chapters, mostly on correspondence analysis, the latest being Visualization and Verbalization of Data in 2015. He has given short courses in fifteen countries to environmental scientists, sociologists, data scientists and marketing professionals, and has specialized in statistics in ecology and social science.
