Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the Harper Family In 1894, Mrs. Jane Cowles Ford was appointed Historian of the Harper Family; and in 1899, after much conscientious arid pains taking labor she presented the manuscript which she had compiled to the Family Association. A Publishing Committee was appointed, consisting of Mr. Robert A. Austin, of Chicago, as Chairman, Cap tain E. 'r. Palmer, of Omaha, Neb., Mr. E. R. Harper, of Denver, Colo., and Carrie Harper White, of Colorado Springs, Colo. The manuscript was placed in their hands for further action. At the re union of the following year 1900, the Chairman of the Committee reported that, owing to the fact that the Records were received from so many different sources and that there was so much repetition, it would be impossible to print the work in book form until it had been largely re-written. Carrie Harper White was appointed to assume this task, which she has performed ti) the best of her ability, with the material at her disposal. It seems quite eminently fitting that this short sketch of the life of Jane Cowles Ford, who compiled the material for the following Records of the Harper Family should have an important place. This sketch is a tribute of Ford's daughter, Carrie Ford Searle. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Family Records, Vol. 1 of 2: Or the Two Sisters "Heaven forming each on other to depend, - A master, or a servant, or a friend, - Bids each on other for assistance call, Till one man's weakness grows the strength of all. Wants, frailties, fashions, closer still ally The common interest, or endear the tie. To these we owe true friendship, love sincere, Each home felt joy that life inherits here." Pope. "What can be the cause of your abstraction, dear Margaret," said the beautiful Susan Falkland to her sister, who was gazing intently from her bed-room window at the scene before her, apparently forgetful that her toilette was still unfinished, while Susan was engaged with the arrangement of her hair. "You have not uttered a word for this half hour, and you are not usually so slow in preparation for a fine day's enjoyment." A scarcely audible sigh was breathed at the conclusion of these words; and Margaret turned hastily from the objects of her late contemplation, to catch the reason of a sadness which her quick affection had perceived in her sisters manner. "You shall soon hear all that was passing in my mind, dear Susan." "What! all, Margaret?" "Yes, yes, all," rejoined she, as the mantling blood in her laughing cheeks almost convinced her more serious sister that she would not be as able as she was willing to fulfil her promise. Book Description
Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Book Description
Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war.
