Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 20 You have heard the report of the Secretary, and, considering the amount of financial assistance which the Treasurer's report shows we have received, the results of the past year are certainly creditable to those faithful workers who have taken an interest in our Society. Our requirements, unfortunately, are far in excess of the support accorded to us. We need $4,000 to pay off all indebtedness, none of which, however, is pressing; we need a fund to purchase books and manuscripts; and above all we need a permanent fund, the interest of which can be devoted to historical research. There are many priceless treasures, fast going to decay, hidden away in dark corners. These treasures should be unearthed, brought to light and put in permanent form, to inspire and encourage us. History, we are told, is the record of the past. Much of it should be buried in oblivion; but the history of the Catholic Church in America, the struggles of the early pioneers, their devotion to their religion, their charity towards their fellowmen, is not a mere chronicle of events, for it teaches us a lesson and gives us an incentive which we sadly need in this material, selfish age. But few facts relating to the early life of Keating Raw son have been handed down to us of the present day. In accordance with the usage common in good families of the time, it is probable that he was educated at home by pri vate tutors. Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 28 We are forced to see again and again valuable historical material pass forever beyond our grasp because we are too poor to purchase it. Though our library numbers about ten thousand volumes, yet many books which we should possess are not on our shelves because of our poverty. This is especially the case with rare Americana. We are, to quote but one instance, sadly lacking in literature relating to the first of American Catholics, Christopher Columbus, our Columbian collection being outnumbered forty-four to thirty-two by the Philadelphia Free Library. The library of a Catholic Historical Society should be an adequate work-shop for the delver into the history of the Church in America. He should come to our library with assurance of finding there the books which he needs. Not only is our collection of printed books too limited, but the American Catholic Historical Society is not the archive which it should be where the unpublished and, so to speak, raw materials of history are stored. For example, here should be found, at least in manuscript, a detailed history, written by a local investigator, of every parish, every Catholic educational and charitable institution, every Catholic activity in the country. Had we the money with which to conduct it, a nation-wide and coordinated investigation would bring all this priceless material to our society. Some years ago we had the good fortune to be able to pay an archivist at the Vatican to reproduce all documents to be found at that central archive which related to the Church in America. It is surprising how many until then unknown documents were thus brought to light. It is often astonishing how much unpublished and original information remains to be unearthed even on subjects supposed to have been exhaustively investigated. Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 4 After an interval of two years, we again bring out a new volume of the Records of the American Catholic Historical Society. Beginning with this year a volume will be published annually in four quarterly parts, in March, June, September and December. By this change we will be able to issue double the quantity heretofore published, and will have it in our subscribers hands, much more promptly. This is rendered possible by the growing interest in historical research, and the appreciation which has been shown of the value of the Society's work in this direction, as evidenced by a largely increased membership. The Society is not responsible for any opinions expressed or any statements of facts made in the various papers published. Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society, Vol. 26: Of Philadelphia When, therefore, the poison has been once imbibed in tender years a remedy is scarcely ever to be found. For it is an elusive hope that with the growth of years they will know better and will unlearn what they have learned in the beginning; because few give themselves to a thorough and careful study of history and in later years they will find in daily life more perhaps to confirm than to correct their errors. "It is therefore of grave importance that so pressing a danger should be met and to see that historical studies be no longer suffered to remain in the channel of great public and private calamities... Let bare assertions be replaced by the fruits of painful and patient research; judgments rashly formed by the outcome of serious study and frivolous opinions by the criticisms of wisdom. Strenuous efforts should be made to refute all falsehoods and untrue statements by ascending to the fountain heads of information, keeping vividly in mind that the first law of history is 'To dread uttering falsehood; the next not to fear stating the truth; lastly that the historian's writings should be open to no suspicion of partiality or animosity'... If the Church, then, has always deserved well of history, let her again do so to-day when the very state of the times in which we live constrains to that duty. For, as we have already said, since our enemies have recourse above all to history for their weapons the Church must needs be equally armed and where the attack is most violent there arm herself the more strongly for the assault." This letter was written in 1883 and published in English in various publications, among them The Pastor, a monthly journal for priests, where it appeared in October, 1883. It is from there that this abstract is taken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 12 Church in America, and of its distinguished men and women, ecclesiastical and lay, religious and secular, result in the elucidation of truth and the correction of error, we Shall have done a work not less important, perhaps even more so, than that of the noble organizations who visit the widow and the orphan, who alleviate the miseries of the prisons, and who watch by the bedside of the Sick or minister to the dying on the battle-field. If we can build up a great library of works of original reference, we Shall aid the teachers whose explanations of the truth of the religion in which all these good men and women find their incentive are so powerful; and aiding these we aid every good effect that follows from their efforts. We have taken for our field American Catholic History. In taking this we embrace a wide domain; the materials for its truthful recital will be found not alone amidst the archives of our own land, but wherever the records of events are preserved throughout the world. To understand its philosophy, the writer must be familiar not alone with the written words, but his knowledge must extend to racial peculiarities. He must know the proud Spaniard, the tena cious Dutchman, the Frenchman who manifests himself in so many different aspects from the brilliant soldier to the humble missionary priest. The history of the all-conquering Englishman must be his special study; while the aboriginal tribes of the North and the South, from the savage Iroquois to the semicivilized Aztec and Peruvian, pass in review before his keen intelligence. Book Description
Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 31 Cornelia Augusta Peacock was born in Philadelphia on the fifteenth day of January, 1809. The residence of her father, Ralph Peacock, an import merchant grocer, is given in the city directory of that year, at number one, Filbert Street. This was near the Delaware water front, and at that time a select section of respectable homes, now, and for many years past, the home almost exclusively of wholesale warehouses. Cornelia was. The youngest of six: children, Dodsworth, Ralph, Mary, Adeline and George. The mother, however, whose maiden name was Mary Swope, had been married before to a Mr. Bowen of Bowen Hall in the Island of Jamaica. There was a daughter by this former marriage, Isabella, who later married a Mr. Mont gomery. After the death of the mother, in 1833, Cornelia made her home with this half-sister,2 but at the time of the marriage, 1831, it appears that she lived with another sister, Mrs. Louis Duval3 (adeline).
