Book Description
Excerpt from Recollections of Mexico It is equally true of nations as of individuals, that those who are not entirely assured Of a well-established and unquestioned position, are peculiarly sensitive to criticism, however kindly meant or respectfully expressed. Of no people in the world is this more true than of the Mexicans. They understand perfectly their true position in the estima tion of the world, notwithstanding their characteristic vaunting and gasconade. I think that it is generally true that men are most apt to boast of qualities which they are conscious of not possessing. The Mexican character has much that is good in it, but very much also that is bad. In bearing testimony to the former, I cannot be silent as to the latter - for indiscriminate praise is in its effects censure. My fault has been much more that of extenuation than setting down aught in malice - the latter cum, for I was treated with so much kindness by people of all classes, from the lepero in the streets up to the President, that it would be a source of deep pain to me to know that I had wantonly wounded the feelings of any one person in the broad circumference of the Republic. I assure them in all sincerity that I take a deep interest in their continued advances in the great career Of civil liberty, and 'their ultimate success in establishing Repub lican institutions on a permanent basis. God grant them success, both on their own account as well as for the great cause in which they have so long struggled, and under circumstances so discouraging. Excerpt from A Trip to Mexico, or Recollections of a Ten-Months' Ramble in 1849-50 From the want of materials, I do not profess to give a detailed account of any one place I passed through; nor to enter, in any way, into statistics: my intention having been merely to give a plain, brief, and straightforward account of what I myself saw, did, and heard, in the various places that I visited. Book Description
Excerpt from Mexico of the Mexicans The thunders of the titanic struggle which at present convulses Europe have drowned the echoes of strife which come from far-away Mexico, and in the eyes of many the warringfiof the factions in the American Republic will seem very like the battle of the mice and the frogs. Yet we who are sacrificing everything for an ideal should feel a lively sympathy with the Mexican people, for when all is said they, too, are fighting for idealistic reasons - for the possession and free exercise of that liberty towards which the spirit of man in all climes and ages has so painfully yet so persistently aspired. Book Description
Excerpt from Roy and Ray: In Mexico This volume does not pretend to be a guide book to Mexico, or a history of the country. It is simply the record of an actual journey to seven or eight Mexican cities and towns, as experienced by two intelligent, wide-awake children, with some one at hand to answer their questions and call their attention to things they might otherwise not have noticed. If the assurance of one boy to whom the manuscript was read, that it would be interesting to anybody who wanted to know about Mexico, proves to be well-founded, the object of. Book Description
Excerpt from A Short History of Mexico The history of Mexico, subsequent to the conquest by the Spaniards early in the sixteenth century, is scarcely known outside of that country. General histories pass over the three centuries of Spanish rule, the long struggle for independence, the establishment of a short-lived empire followed by a nominal republic, and the rise and fall of a second empire, as subjects of but little interest, and without giving very accurate information regarding them. If any comprehensive history of Mexico exists in the English language, its name fails to appear in any of the long lists of books on Mexico which the present writer has diligently searched. This brief history was prepared with the writers own needs in view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
