Book Description
Spin glasses exhibit random magnetic ordering as a result of competing interactions such as exchange or anisotropy. While they are easily prepared, and many of their general properties have been described, a detailed understanding of their behaviour is still lacking after more than 30 years of study. This book reviews the progress that has been made over the last five years on several aspects of the spin glass problem. Unlike several recent books, the authors concentrate here on experimental results, limiting the theoretical discussion to efforts most directly related to such work. The field of spin glasses, or more generally random magnets, continues to attract the interest of researchers worldwide, and the contributions in this book clearly show that this will be the case for many years to come.

Book Description
On 19 March 1993, Raymond L. Orbach was inaugurated as the eighth Chancellor of the University of California, Riverside. In connection with this occasion, a two-day scientific symposium was held. Invited and contributed papers were presented on subjects related to 2 vital areas of condensed-matter physics in which Chancellor Orbach has made seminal contributions: the effects of disorder on magnetic behavior, and the theory of high-temperature superconductivity. The papers in this book, many of which are by outstanding contributors to these important fields, give an up-to-date overview of recent progress.

Book Description

Book Description
The last few years have seen many developments in the study of ?frustrated? systems, such as spin glasses and random fields. In addition, the application of the idea of spin glasses to other branches of physics, such as vortex lines in high temperature superconductors, protein folding, structural glasses, and the vulcanization of rubber, has been flourishing. The earlier reviews are several years old, so now is an appropriate time to summarize the recent developments. The articles in this book have been written by leading researchers and include theoretical and experimental studies, and large-scale numerical work (using state-of-the-art algorithms designed specifically for spin-glass-type problems), as well as analytical studies.

Book Description
Covering basic physical concepts, experimental methods, and applications, this book is an indispensable text on the fascinating science of magnetism, and an invaluable source of practical reference data. Accessible, authoritative, and assuming undergraduate familiarity with vectors, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics, this textbook is well suited to graduate courses. Emphasis is placed on practical calculations and numerical magnitudes - from nanoscale to astronomical scale - focussing on modern applications, including permanent magnet structures and spin electronic devices. Each self-contained chapter begins with a summary, and ends with exercises and further reading. The book is thoroughly illustrated with over 600 figures to help convey concepts and explain ideas clearly. Easily digestible tables and data sheets provide a wealth of useful information on magnetic properties. The thirty-eight principal magnetic materials, and many more related compounds, are treated in detail.

Book Description
The proceedings provide a topical survey of the static and dynamical magnetic properties of condensed matter studied by neutron scattering which has been the key technique in this field for a long time. The static aspects deal with the determination of long-range ordered spin structures and magnetization densities. The dynamic aspects concentrate on the determination of magnetic excitations such as spin waves and crystal-field transitions. The use of polarized-neutron techniques is particularly emphasized. All these topics are thoroughly introduced, methodically discussed, and highlighted with recent experimental results obtained for a vast variety of magnetic materials (e.g., strongly correlated electron systems, multilayers, nanocrystals, molecular complexes, etc.) by acknowledged experts. Other experimental methods (x-ray scattering, muon spin rotation) in the study of magnetism are compared to neutron scattering.

Book Description
Advanced magnetic nanostructures is an emerging field in magnetism and nanotechnology, but the literature consists of a rich variety of original papers and parts of reviews and books whose scope is comparatively broad. This calls for a book with specific emphasis on state-of-the-art synthetic methods for fabricating, characterizing and theoretically modeling new magnetic nanostructures. This book is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the present state of the field. Leading researchers world-wide have contributed a survey of their special ties to guide the reader through the exploding literature in nanomagnetic structures. The focus is on deliberately structured nanomagnets. It includes cluster assembled, self-organized and patterned thin films but excludes, for example, multilayered thin films. We target both industrial and academic researchers in magnetism and related areas, such as nanotechnology, materials science, and theoretical solid-state physics.
