Book Description
Rebecca's Rose is a dramatic memoir of three women's spiritual journey from the 1960's to the 2000's-a story about the power of love to persevere beyond human expectations. It's a true story about a family coping with the agony of a child with a severe mental disorder. Rebecca's challenging life, filled with the scream of ambulances and with courtroom drama, remains suspenseful because she fights her schizophrenia and does not surrender. In the end, the miracle is that, despite all the obstacles and all the pain, she and her family survive. Rebecca's Rose is primarily the story of a young woman's struggle with schizophrenia. But it is also about family relationships and, in particular, one sister's caregiving love for Rebecca, for her parents, and for her children. The close relationship between Jane and her mother only deepens with the approach of death, a death her mother almost welcomes. A year later, Jane's father is diagnosed with cancer and she must continue her painful journey. Jane's harrowing experiences are a cautionary tale for the baby boom generation, as sons and daughter deals with the aging, decline and impending death of their own parents.

Book Description
Roses, pleasure and politics: a fresh take on Orwell as an avid gardener, whose political writing was grounded in his passion for the natural world. 'I loved this book... An exhilarating romp through Orwell's life and times' Margaret Atwood 'Expansive and thought-provoking' Independent Outside my work the thing I care most about is gardening - George Orwell Inspired by her encounter with the surviving roses that Orwell is said to have planted in his cottage in Hertfordshire, Rebecca Solnit explores how his involvement with plants, particularly flowers, illuminates his other commitments as a writer and antifascist, and the intertwined politics of nature and power. Following his journey from the coal mines of England to taking up arms in the Spanish Civil War; from his prescient critique of Stalin to his analysis of the relationship between lies and authoritarianism, Solnit finds a more hopeful Orwell, whose love of nature pulses through his work and actions. And in her dialogue with the author, she makes fascinating forays into colonial legacies in the flower garden, discovers photographer Tina Modotti's roses, reveals Stalin's obsession with growing lemons in impossibly cold conditions, and exposes the brutal rose industry in Colombia. A fresh reading of a towering figure of the 20th century which finds solace and solutions for the political and environmental challenges we face today, Orwell's Roses is a remarkable reflection on pleasure, beauty, and joy as acts of resistance. 'Luminous...It is efflorescent, a study that seeds and blooms, propagates thoughts, and tends to historical associations' New Statesman 'A genuinely extraordinary mind, whose curiosity, intelligence and willingness to learn seem unbounded' Irish Times

Book Description
This book is BY FAR my favorite book I've written. Many people may not know this about me, but about 5 years ago, I hit my rock bottom. I was severely depressed, addicted to unhealthy substances, and was pretty much done with people altogether. I would literally pack a bowl before going to bed each night so I could reach over in the morning first thing and get high. I didn't want to spend a second of my life sober, so I managed to sneak several smokes a day, even while at work. I hated my job. I practically starved myself into a skeleton. I was in debt. My relationships were strained. Overall, my life sucked. But in reality, it was my MINDSET that sucked. Today my life looks NOTHING like it once did-- the difference between night and day, really. I was able to transform my whole world over the course of several years by first changing my thoughts. After I hit rock bottom and finally decided that I had to change my life, I started reading hundreds of books about spirituality, positivity, manifestation, how to rewire the brain, etc. Over the years, I've taken notes on all of my favorite teachings, the ones that inspired me to blossom into the woman I am proud to be today. It Tickled the Whiskers of My Soul is a book of letters to my "darling little loves" for when they're older, just in case I'm no longer here by the time they're old enough to truly grasp what they're about. In the letters, I summarize the BEST spiritual teachings I've come across in my years of research and practice, the ones that changed my experience of the world in extraordinary ways. The words blessed and grateful hardly feel adequate to express how I feel about my life today. I LOVE MY LIFE NOW! And it's 100% due to the principles I've summarized in this book. The cherry on top is that I had it illustrated because I wanted my little loves to connect with it now, even though they won't read it for years to come. The illustrations are SO CUTE, and they make the book a million times more fun to read. I sincerely hope something in it will ignite something in you that'll provide a key to the greater richness life has to offer!

Book Description
From the award-winning writer-director of Personal Velocity comes a startling drama about the nature of family and the meaning of ideals In his first role since Gangs of New York, Daniel Day-Lewis plays Jack Slavin, an engineer who over thirty years ago walked away from the mainstream to live out a more deliberate life. But the island commune he began in hopes of a better future has long since imploded and he is now its final resident. Jack's only other companion is his 16-year-old daughter Rose (Camilla Belle), whom he has deliberately sheltered from the outside world. Now, beset by terminal illness, encroaching developers, and Rose's emerging womanhood, Jack faces troubling questions about the days ahead. In an attempt to provide his daughter with the kind of family she's never known, Jack invites Kathleen (Catherine Keener), the woman he's been secretly seeing on the mainland, and her sons to live with them. But rather than comforted, Rose feels betrayed and lashes out with a willful and deliberate retribution that places her innocence on the battlefield and Kathleen's safety in danger. His carefully constructed world flung out of control, Jack finds himself trapped between two headstrong women and forced to take action. With The Ballad of Jack and Rose, award-winning filmmaker Rebecca Miller has created a powerful and poetic third feature about a man who has cut himself off from a society that refuses to live up to his standards, and a young girl's sudden coming-of-age.
