Book Description
English writing is acknowledged as an essential skill for critical thinking, learning, and expression, and most EFL learners find themselves struggling when writing in English due to a lack of writing skills, content knowledge, writing strategies, intrinsic motivation, and fluency development practice. This edited volume, covering innovative approaches such as e-learning, strategy-based instruction, metacognitive training, a minimal grammar approach, writing assessment, and a genre-based approach, aims to innovate writing instruction in Chinese speaking regions, which has traditionally been characterized by rigid, teacher-centered, test-oriented approaches. We aim for this edited volume to provide theoretical underpinnings as well as contemporary practical advice related to EFL writing instruction for Chinese speakers.

Book Description
Writing as a learning activity offers an account of the potentials of writing as a tool for learning. Four aspects of writing emerge particularly clearly through the chapters. First, writing to learn depends on the cognitive strategies of the writer; instruction in such strategies contributes significantly to the ability to use writing as a learning tool. Secondly, strategies for writing and reasoning are largely specific to academic disciplines. Thirdly, writing is not, as traditionally conceived, only an individual ability, but also an activity that is social. It is a collaborative practice facilitated by representational tools-- books, computer, notes, schemata, drawings, etc. – by which knowledge is acquired, organized, and transformed at various levels of complexity. Fourthly, writing is a productive activity, exemplified by the varied and positive effects of writing on learning different subjects at various educational levels.

Book Description
This timely volume addresses issues pertaining to language teaching, learning and research during the pandemic. In times of a global emergency, the aftermath of emergency remote teaching (ERT) cannot be ignored. The question of how language educators and researchers unleash creativity and employ strategies vis-à-vis ERT still remains to be answered. With practitioners in mind, it covers a broad spectrum of educational settings across continents, target languages and methodologies. Specifically, it reveals viable ways of utilizing digital technologies to bypass social distancing while highlighting the pitfalls and challenges associated with crisis teaching and research. This volume comprises two parts: Teacher Voice vicariously transports readers to practitioners’ compelling stories of how teacher resilience, identity and professional development are crystallized in adaptive pedagogy, online teaching practicum, virtual study programs and communities of practice during ERT. The second part, Researcher Corner, showcases innovative approaches for both novice and seasoned researchers to upskill their toolkits, ranging from case study research and mixed methods designs, to auto- and virtual ethnography and social media research. The array of food for thought provides a positive outlook and inspires us to rethink our current practices and future directions in the post-COVID world. Regardless of their backgrounds and experiences, readers will be able to relate to this accessible volume that harmonizes research and practice, and speaks from the hearts of all the contributors.
