The laws of animal behavior have been revised and revealed through research performed by zoologists, physiologists and experimental psychologists. Each has contributed much. Their main meeting ground has been the study of mammals, especially rats. The rat brain is the most widely used animal model in neurobio logy. The frequency of its use underlines the need for stereotaxic atlases of the rat brain. The first attempt to fulfill this require ment was made by Krieg (1946c), but his atlas contains only very rough data based on 30 schematic drawings of coronal sections. The drawings are exaggeratedly schematic and signifi cantly distorted. This, together with the fact that Krieg delin eated far too few structures in the di- and rhombencephalon, makes the accurate placement of electrodes difficult. Accurate [1] electrode placement is essential for advanced techniques in mod em neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and neurochemical studies. Nevertheless, Krieg's work represents the first delinea tion of cortical areas in the rat. These delineations were more elaborately produced and partly corroborated by experimental work by Krieg (1946a, b, 1947). Despite its shortcomings, this fundamentally valuable series of reports greatly influenced ex perimental approaches in the four decades following its publica tion. The work of Konig and Klippel (1963) was another land mark in the development of stereotaxic atlases of the rat brain. This atlas is one of the most widely used works of reference on stereotaxic coordinates of the rat brain. Some difficulties, however, arise from the drastic changes there have been in the accepted parcellation of the thalamus, septum, and amygdala since the publication of this atlas.

Approximately 10 years have elapsed since the first volume of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI) Monographs on Pathology of Laboratory Animals, Endocrine System was completed. New information of interest to pathologists has developed at a rather remarkable pace during the intervening years. Exceptional progress has been made in the routine identification of cell products in endo crine cells. A better understanding has developed of the mechanisms involved in cell metabolism, particularly involving toxins and car cinogens. Clear concepts have developed concerning the significance of some pathologic lesions in the endocrine system and their relation to human health and risk assessment. Standardized nomenclature has developed significantly during the 1O-year period since the first volume and is being utilized on an international basis. This has resulted in significant improvement in communication of pathologic data to regulatory agencies and in scientific publications worldwide. This monograph series and others sponsored by ILSI have produced a significant effect on improved communications and the international acceptance of standardized nomenclature. In this second edition, new formats have been used where more appropriate for the subjects to be covered. In many cases, the format used in the first edition still is useful. It is still necessary to recognize the morphologic features of pathologic lesions in order to identify them precisely, an essential step toward development of new insights into pathogenetic mechanisms and their use in decisions eventually applicable to public health.

The growth of neurochemistry, molecular biology, and biochemical genetics has led to a burgeoning of new information relevant to the pathogenesis of brain dysfunction. This explosion of exciting new information is crying out for collation and meaningful synthesis. In its totality, it defies systematic summa tion, and, of course, no one author can cope. Thus invitations for contributions were given to various experts in areas which are under active investigation, of current neurological interest, and pregnant. Although this project is relatively comprehensive, by dint of size, other topics might have been included; the selection was solely my responsibility. I believe systematic summation a virtual impossibility-indeed, hardly worth the effort. The attempt to assemble all of the sections involved in a large treatise with mUltiple authors inevitably results in untoward delays due to the difference in the rate at which various authors work. Therefore, the following strategy has been adopted: multiple small volumes and a relatively flexible format, with publication in order of receipt and as soon as enough chapters are assembled to make publication practical and economical. In this way, the time lag between the ideas and their emergence in print is the shortest.
