Advanced aerospace systems are becoming increasingly more complex, and customers are demanding lower cost, higher performance, and high reliability. Increased demands are placed on the design engineers to collaborate and integrate design needs and objectives early in the design process to minimize risks that may occur later in the design development stage. High performance systems require better understanding of system sensitivities much earlier in the design process to meet these goals. The knowledge, skills, intuition, and experience of an individual design engineer will need to be extended significantly for the next generation of aerospace system designs. Then a collaborative effort involving the designer, rapid and reliable analysis tools and virtual experts will result in advanced aerospace systems that are safe, reliable, and efficient. This paper discusses the evolution, status, needs and directions for rapid modeling and analysis tools for structural analysis. First, the evolution of computerized design and analysis tools is briefly described. Next, the status of representative design and analysis tools is described along with a brief statement on their functionality. Then technology advancements to achieve rapid modeling and analysis are identified. This paper also contains the case study that many participants used as a problem to frame their analyses, and a summary of the workshop’s results. The workshop consisted of three keynote talks, three panels, presentations of peer-reviewed papers, as well as presentations of various position papers by the participants. The keynote speakers at this year’s workshop were Daniel Berry, Aravind Joshi, and Lori Clarke. Each of their talks was used to set the tone for the p- sentations and discussions for that particular day. Daniel Berry presented an overview of the needs and challenges of natural language processing in requi- ments engineering, with a special focus on ambiguity in his talk “Ambiguity in Natural Language Requirements. ” Aravind Joshi provided an overview of current natural language processing research in discourse analysis in the talk “Some Recent Developments in Natural Language Processing. ” Finally, Lori Clarke showed how to combine formal requirements speci?cation with natural language processing to cope with the complex domain of medical information processes in “Getting the Details Right.

Software quality is a generalised statement difficult to agree or disagree with until a precise definition of the concept of "Software Quality" is reached in terms of measurable quantities. Unfortunately, for the software technology the basic question of: • what to measure; • how to measure; • when to measure; • how to deal with the data obtained are still unanswered and are also closely dependant on the field of application. In the past twenty years or more there have been a number of conferences and debates focusing on the concept of Software Quality, which produced no real industrial impact. Recently, however, the implementation of a few generic standards (ISO 9000, IEEE etc.) has produced and improved application of good practice principles at the industrial level. As a graduate in PhYSiCS, I still believe it is a long way before the concept of Software Quality can be defined exactly and measured, if ever. This is way I think the AQuIS series of conferences is important, its object begin to provide a platform for the transfer of technology and know how between Academic, Industrial and Research Institutions, in the field of Software Quality. Visual notations and languages continue to play a pivotal role ˆ in the design of complex software systems. In many cases visual notations are used to - scribe usage or interaction scenarios of software systems or their components. While representing scenarios using a visual notation is not the only possibility, a vast majority of scenario description languages is visual. Scenarios are used in telecommunications as Message Sequence Charts, in object-oriented system design as Sequence Diagrams, in reverse engineering as execution traces, and in requirements engineering as, for example, Use Case Maps or Life Sequence Charts. These techniques are used to capture requirements, to capture use cases in system documentation, to specify test cases, or to visualize runs of existing systems. They are often employed to represent concurrent systems that int- act via message passing or method invocation. In telecommunications, for more than 15 years the International Telecommunication Union has standardized the Message Sequence Charts (MSCs) notation in its recommendation Z. 120. More recently, with the emergence of UML as a predominant software design meth- ology, there has been special interest in the development of the sequence d- gram notation. As a result, the most recent version, 2. 0, of UML encompasses the Message Sequence Chart notation, including its hierarchical modeling f- tures. Other scenario-?avored diagrams in UML 2. 0 include activity diagrams and timing diagrams.

Next year, ISD crosses the North Sea and in the traditions of the Vikings, invades England. Like every ISD conference, ISD2000 gave participants an opportunity to express ideas on the current state of the art in information systems development, and to discuss and exchange views about new methods, tools and applications. This is particularly important now, since the field of ISD has seen rapid, and often bewildering, changes. To quote a Chinese proverb, we are indeed cursed, or blessed, depending on how we choose to look at it, to be "living in interesting times".
