This book deals with novel machine vision architecture ideas that make real-time projection-based algorithms a reality. The design is founded on raster-mode processing, which is exploited in a powerful and flexible pipeline. We concern ourselves with several image analysis algorithms for computing: projections of gray-level images along linear patterns (i. e. , the Radon transform) and other curved contours; convex hull approximations; the Hough transform for line and curve detection; diameters; moments and principal components, etc. Addition ally, we deal with an extensive list of key image processing tasks, which involve generating: discrete approximations of the inverse Radon transform operator; computer tomography reconstructions; two-dimensional convolutions; rotations and translations; multi-color digital masks; the discrete Fourier transform in polar coordinates; autocorrelations, etc. Both the image analysis and image processing algorithms are supported by a similar architecture. We will also of some of the above algorithms to the solution of demonstrate the applicability various industrial visual inspection problems. The algorithms and architectural ideas surveyed here unleash the power of the Radon and other non-linear transformations for machine vision applications. We provide fast methods to transform images into projection space representa tions and to backtrace projection-space information into the image domain. The novelty of this approach is that the above algorithms are suitable for implementa tion in a pipeline architecture. Specifically, random access memory and other dedicated hardware components which are necessary for implementation of clas sical techniques are not needed for our algorithms.

Forty years ago, in 1957, the Principle of Maximum Entropy was first intro duced by Jaynes into the field of statistical mechanics. Since that seminal publication, this principle has been adopted in many areas of science and technology beyond its initial application. It is now found in spectral analysis, image restoration and a number of branches ofmathematics and physics, and has become better known as the Maximum Entropy Method (MEM). Today MEM is a powerful means to deal with ill-posed problems, and much research work is devoted to it. My own research in the area ofMEM started in 1980, when I was a grad uate student in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sydney, Australia. This research work was the basis of my Ph.D. the sis, The Maximum Entropy Method and Its Application in Radio Astronomy, completed in 1985. As well as continuing my research in MEM after graduation, I taught a course of the same name at the Graduate School, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijingfrom 1987to 1990. Delivering the course was theimpetus for developing a structured approach to the understanding of MEM and writing hundreds of pages of lecture notes.

Image processing is a fascinating applications area, not a fundamental science of sufficient generality to warrant studying it for its own sake. The second, revised edition of this book was suggested by the impressive sales of the first edition. Fortunately this enabled us to incorporate new important results that had just been obtained. The ASSOM (Adaptive-Subspace SOM) is a new architecture in which invariant-feature detectors emerge in an unsupervised learning process. Its basic principle was already introduced in the first edition, but the motiva tion and theoretical discussion in the second edition is more thorough and consequent. New material has been added to Sect. 5.9 and this section has been rewritten totally. Correspondingly, Sect. 1.4, which deals with adaptive subspace classifiers in general and constitutes the prerequisite for the ASSOM principle, has also been extended and rewritten totally. Another new SOM development is the WEBSOM, a two-layer architecture intended for the organization of very large collections of full-text documents such as those found in the Internet and World Wide Web. This architecture was published after the first edition came out. The idea and results seemed to be so important that the new Sect. 7.8 has now been added to the second edition. Another addition that contains new results is Sect. 3.15, which describes the acceleration in the computing of very large SOMs. It was also felt that Chap. 7, which deals with 80M applications, had to be extended.

The image taken by a moving camera changes with time. These image motions contain information about the motion of the camera and about the shapes of the objects in the field of view. There are two main types of image motion, finite displacements and image velocities. Finite displacements are described by the point correspondences between two images of the same scene taken from different positions. Image velocities are the velocities of the points in the image as they move over the projection surface. Reconstruction is the task of obtaining from the image-motions information about the camera motion or about the shapes of objects in the field of view. In this book the theory underlying reconstruction is described. Reconstruction from image motion is the subject matter of two different sci entific disciplines, photogrammetry and computer vision. In photogrammetry the accuracy of reconstruction is emphasised; in computer vision the emphasis is on methods for obtaining information from images in real time in order to guide a mechanical device such as a robot arm or an automatic vehicle.
