Information systems are the backbone of many of today's computerized applications. Distributed databases and the infrastructure needed to support them have been well studied. However, this book is the first to address distributed database interoperability by examining the successes and failures, various approaches, infrastructures, and trends of the field. This gap is more pronounced than usual, partly because of the way businesses operate, the systems they have, and the difficulties created by systems' autonomy and heterogeneity. Knowledge graphs are increasingly used in scientific and industrial applications. The large number and size of knowledge graphs published as Linked Data in autonomous sources has led to the development of various interfaces to query these knowledge graphs. Therefore, effective query processing approaches that enable efficient information retrieval from these knowledge graphs need to address the capabilities and limitations of different Linked Data Fragment interfaces. This book investigates novel approaches to addressing the challenges that arise in the presence of decentralized, heterogeneous sources of knowledge graphs. The effectiveness of these approaches is empirically evaluated and demonstrated using various real world and synthetic large-scale knowledge graphs throughout. First, a sample-based approach for generating fine-grained performance profiles is proposed, and it is demonstrated how the information from such profiles can be leveraged in cost model-based query planning. In addition, a sample-based data distribution profiling approach is advocated which aims to estimate the statistical profile features of large knowledge graphs and the applicability of these estimations in federated querying processing is demonstrated. The remainder of the book focuses on techniques to devise efficient query processing approaches when heterogeneous interfaces need to be queried but no fine-grained statistics are available. Robust techniques to support efficient query processing in these circumstances are investigated and results are shared to demonstrate the way in which these techniques can outperform state-of-the-art approaches. Finally, the author describes a framework for federated query processing over heterogeneous federations of Linked Data Fragments to exploit the capabilities of different sources by defining interface-aware approaches.

This work is a revision of the doctoral dissertation of Eduardo Mena pre sented to the Department of Computer Science and System Engineering at the University of Zaragoza (Spain) in November 1998 [Mena 98]. The OBSERVER system was developed as a result of this Ph.D. thesis. This book is composed of eight chapters. In Chapter 1 we introduce our rationale for writing a book about systems that process queries in global information systems. Then in Chapter 2 we review the techno logical context for our work, including distributed and heterogeneous environments and the use of ontologies. We also compare related work to our own. Chapter 3 presents our proposed global system architecture for query processing in global information systems. The main modules in the architecture and the main steps given to process a query are briefly introduced. Chapters 4 through 7 provide a detailed description of each query processing step. In Chapter 4 we detail the steps needed to access the data corre sponding to a query formulated over an ontology. All the aspects related to distribution, structural and semantic heterogeneity, and restricted query capabilities of the underlying data repositories are considered in this chapter. The main features of the mapping information that relates ontologies and data repositories are also described. Finally, we show the process of generating appropriate plans to access each involved reposi tory and the correlation of the answers coming from different reposito ries.

Abstract: "The proliferation of database systems based on different data models and query languages has created the need for techniques that support interoperability so that information may be shared among the database systems. This dissertation proposal describes a technique to support interoperable query processing when multiple heterogeneous databases are accessed. We will focus on the problem of supporting query transformation transparently, so a user can pose queries locally, without any need of global knowledge about different data models and schema. To support interoperable query transformation, we need to resolve the conflicts (i.e., heterogeneities) between different databases. The conflicts exist because each database has been designed and populated independently of one another, so semantically equivalent concepts may have been defined in many different ways in each model/schema. Furthermore, we also need to consider the different query language utilized by each database to provide interoperability. We propose two kinds of parameterized canonical representations as a means of classifying and resolving heterogeneities. The first canonical form resolves heterogeneity based on the query language. The second canonical form resolves representation heterogeneity based on using two different schema. We initially focus on object and relational schema. The query transformation mechanism can operate on these canonical forms to produce the proper query for a heterogeneous remote database. We will describe an architecture for supporting interoperability and certain functional modules. The first module described is an extractor module (EM) which parses a source query and extracts semantics, corresponding to some primitive expressions in the query which are represented using a canonical form. The second is a heterogeneous mapping module (HTM) which maps among entities in different schema; this module uses mapping rules which reflect global knowledge of the models, schema, and query languages. We use F-logic, a high-level logic representation, to represent the global dictionary knowledge in canonical form. We wil provide some examples of transforming queries from a relational schema to an equivalent object schema. This proposal outlines several topics that need to be studied in order to solve the problems described above. The first area of investigation is the extension of the current canonical representation for source and target (transformed) queries to cover more constructs in the SQL and XSQL query languages. A second area is the extension of the canonical representation for mapping information to cover further solutions for schema conflict, in particular, conflicts among several object schemas. We describe our current prototype implementation which supports the EM and HTM modules for transforming an XSQL query to an SQL query (and vice versa). We expect to extend the functionality of these modules as we progress in our outlined research."
