Book Description
Queries over semi-structured data consider its textual contents as well as structure. Query processing is challenging because of the lack of schema and richness in structure. This dissertation develops a collection of query processing and indexing techniques to support efficient queries over tree- and graph-structured data. Specific contributions include (1) practical index structures for supporting evaluating label path expressions and checking graph reachability, two fundamental primitives for query processing over semi-structured data, and (2) a keyword search system for finding and ranking substructures of interest within text-labeled graph-structured data.

Book Description
Information Organization and Databases: Foundations of Data Organization provides recent developments of information organization technologies that have become crucial not only for data mining applications and information visualization, but also for treatment of semistructured data, spatio-temporal data and multimedia data that are not necessarily stored in conventional DBMSs. Information Organization and Databases: Foundations of Data Organization presents: semistructured data addressing XML, query languages and integrity constraints, focusing on advanced technologies for organizing web data for effective retrieval; multimedia database organization emphasizing video data organization and data structures for similarity retrieval; technologies for data mining and data warehousing; index organization and efficient query processing issues; spatial data access and indexing; organizing and retrieval of WWW and hypermedia. Information Organization and Databases: Foundations of Data Organization is a resource for database practitioners, database researchers, designers and administrators of multimedia information systems, and graduate-level students in the area of information retrieval and/or databases wishing to keep abreast of advances in the information organization technologies.

Book Description
In the context of managing tree-structured data, first, we develop an indexing mechanism that extracts discriminant features from the database and indexes them using a simple tunable inverted structure. Such an index is complemented with an efficient holistic query processing technique that retrieves the matches by operating entirely on space-efficient sequential representation of trees. Second, we propose a framework that enables the development of application-specific hash functions that convert variable-sized graph and tree structured data into fixed-sized hash values. We demonstrate the usability of this framework by developing a hash-based distributed data placement service for semi-structured data. We argue that this service is capable of supporting large scale data management and data mining algorithms.

Book Description
The book is composed of two main parts. The first part is a general study of Semantic Web Search. The second part specifically focuses on the use of semantics throughout the search process, compiling a big picture of Process-oriented Semantic Web Search from different pieces of work that target specific aspects of the process. In particular, this book provides a rigorous account of the concepts and technologies proposed for searching resources and semantic data on the Semantic Web. To collate the various approaches and to better understand what the notion of Semantic Web Search entails, this book presents a general Semantic Web Search model. With respect to this model, the book provides a comprehensive discussion of the state-of-the-art. It elaborates on approaches for crawling, managing and searching Semantic Web resources as well as the various schemes proposed for ranking search results. Besides these specific approaches, search is also studied in a general multi-data-source scenario. This shall demonstrate how this work on search is extended and applied to the Web setting. A major feature of the book is that it considers search and the use of semantics for search also from a process point of view. Extending the general model, the book introduces the notion of Process-oriented Semantic Web Search, where semantics is exploited throughout the entire search process – from query construction to query processing up to result presentation and query refinement. Specific pieces of work targeting these individual steps of the process are combined to form a coherent and consistent picture of Process-oriented Semantic Web Search. In order to convey this general notion as well as the specific concepts and technologies developed for supporting the search process, this book presents a compilation of work called SemSearchPro and provides detailed descriptions on the underlying approaches.
