Book Description
This Workshop was organized to bring once more tagether the scientists of the rather heterogeneaus field of exotic atoms. At present the main topic of the field seems to be the study of the atomic cascade. There are some who study it intentionally -Iet us call them cascadeurs -and others who think they investigate other features of the exotic atoms (like Coulomb capture, particle transfer, muon catalyzed fusion, chemical effects, fundamental properties, etc.) -users-while in fact they study some special consequences of the same atomic cascade. We decided to get cascadeurs and users discuss the problems of exotic atoms at wonderful Erice, at the 5th Course of the International School of Physics of Exotic Atoms. Our Workshop was quite successful, we have heard excellent talks from participants from a dozen countfies and most of them have prepared written contributions for this volume. The Organizers express their gratitude to all participants for their contributions, especially to David Measday for bis concluding remarks (not printed here) and to James Cohen for jumping in for Leonid Ponomarev who had to leave unexpectedly in the middle of the meeting. We greatly appreciate the enthusiastic help of Marianne Signer in every stage of the organization work. Am!, of course, the Workshop could not happen at all without the incredibly efficient organization by the Ettore Majorana Centre of Scientific Culture. Leopold M. Book Description
Few-body resonances are in the frontiers of resonance studies. Very similar problems occur in atomic and molecular physics, nuclear physics and high-energy physics. This collection presents the state of the art of the studies of resonance states in these fields and demonstrates their common methodological aspects. Most of the contributions are theoretical, but quite a few are closely linked with experiments through the data they are dealing with.

Book Description
After an introduction to relativistic quantum mechanics, which lays the foundation for the rest of the text, the author moves on to the phenomenology and physics of fundamental interactions via a detailed discussion of the empirical principles of unified theories of strong, electromagnetic, and weak interactions. There then follows a development of local gauge theories and the minimal standard model of the fundamental interactions together with their characteristic applications. The book concludes with further possibilities and the theory of interactions for elementary particles probing complex nuclei. Numerous exercises with solutions make this an ideal text for graduate courses on quantum mechanics and elementary particle physics.

Book Description
Research with radioactive ion beams has entered a new era with the advent of energetic beams of radioactive nuclei able to induce nuclear reactions. The present book is the first volume of edited lectures based on material presented at the Euroschool on Exotic Beams over the past years. It introduces the graduate student and nonspecialist scientist from related areas to various topics encompassing theoretical, experimental as well as application-related aspects of this growing field of research.

Book Description
Hadronic atoms provide a unique laboratory for studying hadronic interactions essentially at threshold. This text is the first book-form exposition of hadronic atom theory with emphasis on recent developments, both theoretical and experimental. Since the underlying Hamiltonian is a non-self-adjoined operator, the theory goes beyond traditional quantum mechanics and this book covers topics that are often glossed over in standard texts on nuclear physics. The material contained here is intended for the advanced student and researcher in nuclear, atomic or elementary-particle physics. A good knowledge of quantum mechanics and familiarity with nuclear physics are presupposed. Contents: Theoretical Background: Hadronic Atoms OCo An Overview; Extended Quantum Mechanical Framework; Coulomb Wave Functions; Coulomb Propagator and Scattering Operators; Two-Potential Scattering Formalism; Bound States and Low-Energy Scattering; Atomic Spectrum; Gamow States and Completeness Problem; X-Ray Transition Rate; Computational Methods; Examples; Chiral Theory Primer; Comparison with Experiment: Two-Meson Atomic Bound States; Hadronic Hydrogen; Hadronic Deuterium; Hadronic Atoms with A OeN4. Readership: Graduate students and academics in nuclear, atomic, high-energy, computational, quantum and theoretical physics."

Book Description
Madam Chien Shiung Wu, the great physicist of 20th century physics, passed away in February 1997. Born in 1912, she became a towering scientific figure in the second half of the century. Madam Wu and Madame Curie will forever be commemorated as the two great female physicists of the 20th century. On 16-18 August 1997, scientists from around the globe, many of them distinguished in their own right, gathered in Nanjing, where Madam Wu spent her undergraduate years to celebrate the glorious achievements of the great lady. This important volume constitutes the proceedings of the conference. The main advances in fundamental symmetry, nuclear, particle and general physics since parity symmetry breaking and the prospects at the turn of the century are addressed by world-renowned experts. The historical developments in the studies of the β-decay mechanism, vector current conservation, parity, charge conjugation and time reversal nonconservation are vividly depicted by Madam Wu's close friends, including several Nobel laureates.
