Book Description
In recent years it has become apparent that an important part of the theory of artificial intelligence is concerned with reasoning on the basis of uncertain, incomplete, or inconsistent information. A variety of formalisms have been developed, including nonmonotonic logic, fuzzy sets, possibility theory, belief functions, and dynamic models of reasoning such as belief revision and Bayesian networks. Several European research projects have been formed in the area and the first European conference was held in 1991. This volume contains the papers accepted for presentation at ECSQARU-93, the European Conference on Symbolicand Quantitative Approaches to Reasoning and Uncertainty, held at the University of Granada, Spain, November 8-10, 1993.

Book Description
Imagery, Language and Visuo-Spatial Thinking discusses the remarkable human ability to use mental imagery in everyday life: from helping plan actions and routes to aiding creative thinking; from making sense of and remembering our immediate environment to generating pictures in our minds from verbal descriptions of scenes or people. The book also considers the important theme of how individuals differ in their ability to use imagery. With contributions from leading researchers in the field, this book will be of interest to advanced undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers in cognitive psychology, cognitive science and cognitive neuropsychology.

Book Description
This book introduces Meaningful Purposive Interaction Analysis (MPIA) theory, which combines social network analysis (SNA) with latent semantic analysis (LSA) to help create and analyse a meaningful learning landscape from the digital traces left by a learning community in the co-construction of knowledge. The hybrid algorithm is implemented in the statistical programming language and environment R, introducing packages which capture – through matrix algebra – elements of learners’ work with more knowledgeable others and resourceful content artefacts. The book provides comprehensive package-by-package application examples, and code samples that guide the reader through the MPIA model to show how the MPIA landscape can be constructed and the learner’s journey mapped and analysed. This building block application will allow the reader to progress to using and building analytics to guide students and support decision-making in learning.

Book Description
The Internet has been acknowledged as a recent technological revolution, due to its significant impact on society as a whole. Nevertheless, precisely due to its impact, limitations of the current Internet are becoming apparent; in particular, its inability to automatically take into account the meaning of online documents. Some proposals for taking meaning into account began to appear, mainly the so-called Semantic Web, which includes a set of technologies like RDF that are based on new markup languages. Though these technologies could be technically sound, practical limitations, such as the high training level required to construct Semantic Web pages, and the small proportion of current Semantic Web pages make the Sematic Web marginal today and also in the near foreseeable future. Quantitative Semantics and Soft Computing Methods for the Web: Perspectives and Applications will provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings related to quantitative, soft-computing and approximate methods for dealing with Internet semantics. The target audience of this book is composed of professionals and researchers working in the fields of information and knowledge related technologies (e.g. Information sciences and technology, computer science, Web science, and artificial intelligence).
