The Investigation of Organic Reactions and Their Mechanisms
Author: Howard Maskill
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470994169
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 392
Book Description
A range of alternative mechanisms can usually be postulated for most organic chemical reactions, and identification of the most likely requires detailed investigation. Investigation of Organic Reactions and their Mechanisms will serve as a guide for the trained chemist who needs to characterise an organic chemical reaction and investigate its mechanism, but who is not an expert in physical organic chemistry. Such an investigation will lead to an understanding of which bonds are broken, which are made, and the order in which these processes happen. This information and knowledge of the associated kinetic and thermodynamic parameters are central to the development of safe, efficient, and profitable industrial chemical processes, and to extending the synthetic utility of new chemical reactions in chemical and pharmaceutical manufacturing, and academic environments. Written as a coherent account of the principal methods currently used in mechanistic investigations, at a level accessible to academic researchers and graduate chemists in industry, the book is highly practical in approach. The contributing authors, an international group of expert practitioners of the techniques covered, illustrate their contributions by examples from their own research and from the relevant wider chemical literature. The book covers basic aspects such as product analysis, kinetics, catalysis, and investigation of reactive intermediates. It also includes material on significant recent developments, e.g. computational chemistry, calorimetry, and electrochemistry, in addition to topics of high current industrial relevance, e.g. reactions in multiphase systems, and synthetically useful reactions involving free radicals and catalysis by organometallic compounds.

Breaking the Silence
Author: Colleen Hanson
Publisher:

Languages : en
Pages : 428
Book Description
This is an autobiography about my experiences over the course of my life growing up and living in Wisconsin. Specifically, the purpose of the book is to tell my own stories about my experiences with different forms of crises that were internalized and never addressed, which is why it is called "breaking the silence." From my own experience with post-partum depression to my son's mental breakdown as a result of police harassment, the book tells stories that many families go through, but few ever share. Towards the latter part of the book, I even tell about my son's experience in the court of Judge Daniel McDonald, who became infamous in 1985 in Wisconsin after he murdered a public defender and then committed suicide in jail. More importantly than this sensational story, I tell about the neglect which all sorts of people who experience forms of mental illness face and about the work I've done to combat this horrifically bad treatment, for myself, my family, and for clients I worked with at a state agency. I believe this book is important. Although many of the events it discusses are thirty years past or more, the argument it makes about how mental health patients must be treated better is currently as important as ever. Even today, jails are usually the place where people experiencing mental health crises are sent. Few other books are talking about this important issue currently, and none can talk about the issue from the perspective of a lifetime. I am now in my seventies, and I believe more than ever that people like me need to speak up about what we've seen and experienced if any positive change is going to occur. I would like to give tribute to all my counselors; my educational psychologists; my teachers at University of Wisconsin-Platteville; my teachers at Madison Area Technical College in sociology, criminal justice, and psychology; and my classmates who dedicated much of their personal time to give their support. I always came back to the education system each time I had a struggle in my life. I would also like to thank The Madison Writing Assistance (MWA) instructors from UW-Madison who supported me, especially Beth Godbee who got me started with MWA and has endlessly encouraged me to continue. I was blessed to have the amount of concern, interest, and dedication that everyone showed me each time they guided me through my writing. They made what I believed was impossible into a reality. To everyone who has saved my life, literally. Thank you.
