Dans les premiers mois de vie, l'enfant communique essentiellement de manière non verbale même si cette communication n'est pas toujours intentionnelle. Progressivement, grâce à la maturation neuro-motrice, psychique et cognitive d'une part et à l'environnement socio-affectif de l'enfant d'autre part, la communication verbale émerge et se développe. Il nous a paru intéressant d'observer la mise en place des compétences langagières ainsi que des comportements de communication non verbale qui les précèdent et les accompagnent, chez des enfants âgés de 20 mois. Pour permettre une approche plus objective des acquisitions, nous avons mis au point un protocole composé d'épreuves évaluant les compétences dans plusieurs domaines (compréhension, expression, rapport aux objets, rapport aux autres et praxies bucco faciales), que nous avons proposé à 64 enfants de 20 mois. L'élaboration de ce protocole n'a pas pour objectif de poser un diagnostic précocement, mais plutôt de pouvoir repérer les enfants «à risque» qui pourraient alors bénéficier d'une attention et d'un soutien particuliers quant au développement de leur langage et de leur communication. En cela, cette évaluation n'a d'intérêt pour les enfants que si elle est prédictive d'éventuelles difficultés de communication verbale rencontrées plus tard par l'enfant. Dans cette perspective, nous avons revu 59 des enfants de la population, à 27 mois et nous leur avons proposé des épreuves tirées du protocole EVALO 2-6 version « enfants tout petits et enfants sans langage », ainsi que certaines épreuves (complexifiées ou pas) que nous leur avions déjà proposées à 20 mois.Ce travail présente la validation du protocole 20 mois à partir des résultats obtenus par la population et les résultats de ces mêmes enfants aux épreuves proposées à 27 mois. Concernant le protocole 20 mois, les résultats statistiques et le réaménagement des items qui s'en est suivi ont donné lieu à un protocole composé finalement plus que de quatres domaines (l'item praxie bucco-faciale ayant été retiré). Les domaines «compréhension» et « expression» sont suffisamment discriminants, et peuvent être regroupés en épreuves. Les épreuves ainsi formées peuvent être regroupées en sous-domaines. Enfin, pour les domaines «rapport aux objets» et «rapport aux autres », les analyses statistiques ont orienté la présentation des résultats sous forme de profils, sans calcul de score global. Les résultats du protocole 27 mois témoignent des progrès faits par les enfants en l'espace de sept mois et de la rapidité de leurs acquisitions dans les cinq domaines proposés lors de cette seconde passation. Ainsi, sur le socle des compétences observées à 20 mois, de nouvelles acquisitions se sont mises en place. De ce fait, le protocole 27 mois est nécessairement plus riche et plus complexe. Lors des moments passés avec les enfants, nous avons aussi pu percevoir des progrès sur des compétences qui permettent la réussite des épreuves proposées m.ais qui ne sont pas obligatoirement visibles directement dans le protocole: telles que la capacité de concentration sur un temps plus long. Les normes établies par ces résultats donnent des repères qui doivent être corrélés à d'autres attitudes de l'enfant observées dans d'autres circonstances; l'aspect analytique de la situation d'évaluation pouvant entraîner chez l'enfant un comportement et des performances peu représentatifs de ceux qu'il présente dans la vie quotidienne.

De nombreux auteurs, dont Bruner (1983) et Lahey (1988), ont montré qu'il existe une communication intentionnelle chez les jeunes enfants avant l'apparition des premiers mots. Or, il existe peu de tests en orthophonie pour évaluer cette communication prélinguistique avant 2 ans. Notre travail porte sur la création d'une grille d'évaluation permettant d’apprécier cette communication prélinguistique chez les enfants de 7 à 16 mois. Pour cela, il a été question d’observer et d’évaluer les comportements communicatifs prélinguistiques grâce, d’une part, à la théorie des comportements précurseurs à la communication de Lahey (1988) et de Leclerc (2005), permettant de déterminer la nature des moyens de communication de l’enfant et, d’autre part, la théorie des actes de communication, adaptée des actes de langage par Bernicot et al (1998) et Guidetti (2003) permettant d’analyser les fonctions de ces comportements. Nous avons filmé 35 enfants répartis en deux groupes selon les derniers stades de Bates (1976) et nous avons observé leurs comportements précurseurs et leurs actes de communication, afin de considérer l’effet de l’âge sur le développement des compétences communicatives précoces. Notre recherche a montré qu’avec l'âge, les trois types de comportements précurseurs et d'actes de communication augmentaient en nombre et en variété. Il a ainsi été possible d’établir des profils d’utilisation de ces comportements précurseurs et actes de communication pour chacun des deux stades. Au stade illocutoire, les enfants utilisent majoritairement des précurseurs pragmatiques pour communiquer intentionnellement mais ne privilégient pas d'acte de communication en particulier. Au stade locutoire, les enfants utilisent les précurseurs pragmatiques et formels de manière prépondérante pour produire des actes de communication, qui sont principalement des actes de communication assertifs. Avec l'âge, les comportements communicatifs prélinguistiques augmentent et se diversifient. Cette recherche ouvre des perspectives d’évaluation et de prise en charge précoce des troubles du langage pour les orthophonistes.
