Après avoir rappelé l'épidémiologie des reprises et la mouvance de celle-ci à travers leur courte histoire, une approche soigneuse des pièges de la démarche diagnostique est présentée. Si la décision de reprise se confirme, la notion de bénéfice/risque doit conduire au consentement éclairé du patient, validé par l'anesthésiologiste qui doit prendre en compte les comorbités et la fragilité de ces patients souvent âgés. Dès lors, l'état des lieux tant au niveau osseux que du matériel en place doit être effectué. Les données actuelles sont largement présentées : classifications des pertes de substances et leur évolution, analyse de l'état de la prothèse initiale et de ses difficultés d'exérèse.
