Book Description
Her world shattered by tragedy, Emma Perry thought she'd never survive the murder of her husband and child, let alone regain her faith and ability to trust. But the Witness Security program took her to Rosewood, Texas, where a caring community and belief in God gave her the strength to rebuild her life. And the compassion to reach out to others—wounded souls like Seth McAllister, Emma's embittered neighbor, who was struggling with the death of his own child. Together, Seth and Emma began to open their hearts to love. But when the still-obsessed killer picked up Emma's trail, would Seth's prayers be enough to pull them through?

Book Description
Published in 1991: This book explores the possibilities of protecting the heart against stress and ischemia through adaptation to intermittent hypoxia or to mild, nondamaging stress exposure. These possibilities are based on studies that show an increase in the potency and efficiency of stress-limiting systems when subjected to repeated stress actions, adaptation to high altitude hypoxia, or adaptation to increased physical loads. Any stress reaction is coupled with an activation of central and local stress-limiting systems, such as GABA-ergic, opioidergic, and serotonergic systems in the brain, as well as antioxidants, prostaglandins, and adenosine in executory organs. The book also presents the use of metabolites of stress-limiting systems rather than adaptation as a means to prevent cardiac arrythmias. It also discusses genetically determined deficiencies of stress-limiting systems and their role in the etiology of stress-induced diseases. Cardiologists and researchers studying stress and its effect on cardiovascular systems will find this book extremely useful.

Book Description
We are again proud to present an excellent volume of contemporary topics in NMR and EPR to the biological community. The philosophy behind the volume and the presentation of each chapter remains at the high level reflected in our earlier volumes: to be current, pedagogical, and critical. The first chapters, as always, address a subject related to in-vivo biology. Gabby Elgavish addresses NMR spectroscopy of the intact heart. lain Campbell and colleagues present a state-of-the-art description of NMR methods for probing enzyme kinetics in intact cells and tissues. Klaus Mobius and Wolfgang Lubitz have produced a thorough review of the principles and applications of ENDOR spectroscopy in photobiology and biochemistry including discussions of liquid and solid state ENDOR as well as CIDEP-enhanced ENDOR. The final chapter by Hans Vogel and Sture Forsen addresses a contemporary problem in inorganic biochemistry, namely cation binding to calcium binding proteins. We are pleased to announce that a special forthcoming volume will be devoted entirely to the subject of "Spin Labeling: Theory and Applications (3rd compendium)." A substantial degree of progress has occurred in this important area of ESR in biology since the last treatise on the subject in 1979. Lastly, we acknowledge our colleagues in the field who continue to support this excellent series both as subscribers and contributors. We pledge to continue servicing the community as long as the need exists.

Book Description
Over the past ?fty years, advanced techniques and strategies have arisen in the ?eld of myocardial protection. Meticulous trials, focusing on pulmonary protection during heart surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), have been missing. This te- book is intended to serve as a useful tool to spread information on strategies for lung protection during heart surgery with CPB. Emphasis on pulmonary protection will be turned to lung perfusion as an adjunct for minimizing the deleterious effects of pulmonary ischemia-reperfusion injury in heart surgery. Many renowned authors have contributed by presenting their expe- ence on lung perfusion in basic research and clinical trials. Furthermore, they have enlightened the quality of this textbook with new ideas, concepts, and future perspectives. The scope of this textbook is of interest to different professionals, such as card- vascular surgeons, pulmonary surgeons, transplantation physicians, cardiothoracic anesthesiologists, intensive care physicians, cardiothoracic fellows, radiologists, basic sciences physicians, cardiologists, pulmonary medicine physicians, perfusi- ists, nurses, students, and researchers. This textbook has 7 sections, aimed at addressing general and speci?c aspects of pulmonary protection during heart surgery with CPB. The ?rst section on general concepts provides information about anatomic, physiologic, histologic, molecular, and radiologic considerations regarding the lungs. The second section focuses on ischemia-reperfusion injury and is composed of several interesting chapters, addressing the basic science aspects of pulmonary p- tection, as well as experimental and clinical experiences from different heart surgery centers worldwide.

Book Description
Although cardiac surgery has made an enormous progress during the last decades, the discipline has to cope with essential changes: Patients are increasingly cared for by cardiologists and therefore referred to the surgeon in a later stage of disease. Consequently, they are more often in an increasingly serious state or in advanced age with significant comorbidities. In order to meet the requirements of these different patient groups, cardiosurgical treatments require special protectional strategies for the heart in order to perform the planned operations safely. This book presents the latest knowledge of modern techniques of myocardial protection taking into consideration the different patient groups and current scientific strategies. Furthermore, it discusses present and future scientific approaches in myocardial protection and preservation.

Book Description
2 The free internal Ca+ concentration in human red cells is set according to the leak 2 and-pump principle: There is a finite passive Ca+ influx at the physiological 2 2 Ca+ -gradient across the membrane which is compensated by Ca+ pumping in the outward direction with a rate given by the degree of saturation of the A TP-fuelled Ca 2 pump at the steady-state internal Ca+ concentration. Simons (1982) recently devised a method allowing the measurement of the steady 2 2 state internal Ca+ concentration. Cells are suspended in media of different Ca+ con 2 2 tent whose Ca+ concentration is monitored by a Ca+ -selective electrode. When the cells are lysed (by digitonin) there is an upward or downward deflection of the elec 2 trode signal. At the point of zero deflection, the cellular Ca+ concentration equals that 2 of the medium. The result is, that in fresh human red blood cells the Ca+ concentra tion is ;;;; O.4,uM (this is an upper estimate; the true value may be considerably lower).
