Book Description
The concept of ‘the triple bottom line’ has recently emerged to describe a new framework for development aimed at achieving economic and social balance while maintaining the long-term integrity of ecological systems. This requires measuring not only the economic viability of projects, but also their impact on the environment and their contribution to society. We live in a world where most people are aware of the importance of our environment. The way in which this realisation came about has, in hindsight, not been as simple as could have been expected. Systematic evaluations of the economic viability of projects using discounting date back to the beginning of the last century and are something which has been readily accepted, especially over the last few decades. However, an integrated approach, including environmental and social aspects, is much more recent, and even now, the methods and methodologies for such an approach are still being developed. This volume details the state of the art of the development towards the triple bottom line. It indicates where there is still debate about fundamental principles, where theory has been overlooked in the name of convenience, and where there are still unresolved problems. The discussions provided here will serve to provide a more detailed understanding of what we do in our calculations, what they mean and the limitations thereof.

Book Description
The cost benefit technique is so often referenced in government policy that a correct understanding is necessary for officials entrusted with public decisions. This book presents essential elements for understanding, interpreting, and conducting cost benefit analysis (CBA) in the context of local government. If you’re charged with preparing numerical analyses to assess the worthiness of a specific policy proposal, you’ll need this book to understand how costs and benefits are identified and analyzed in terms of economic efficiency and resource allocation. CBA is rooted in and has little or no value apart from the economic concepts of cost and resource efficiency. This book is designed to teach the correct use and interpretation of cost benefit analysis, while advising you of CBA’s limitations and pitfalls. Case studies, presented in the final chapters of this book, represent typical proposals confronted by local officials. The book also includes instructions for using computer spreadsheets to build basic cost benefit models and an appendix on the step-by-step process of discounting future costs and benefits.

Book Description
In the past few years several manuals dealing with project planning for the developing countries have been published. One may therefore ask why another study on this subject has been written. The answer is that the manuals, in my opinion, do not deal adequately with the income distribution aspects of projects. This study was written to demonstrate how traditional project plan ning criteria can be expanded to include income distribution considerations. Part I of the study (Chapters I through 6) discusses conventional project planning criteria. Chapter I serves as an introduction by reviewing some of the broader principles of the analysis. Chapters 2 and 3 examine in detail the valuation of benefits and costs, paying particular attention to the problems that arise in making such valuations in developing countries. While Chapter 4 is concerned with the rules to be followed for maximizing the net benefits of a single project, Chapter 5 reviews the techniques for maximizing the net benefits of a series of projects. Chapter 6 deals with a number of different topics, ranging from the practical problems posed by linkages and externalities to an examin ation of the usefulness of international lending agencies and problems related to divergencies from situations of internal and external balance. Part II is concerned with income distribution, and begins in Chapter 7 with a review of the concept of a social welfare function.

Book Description
The new economy, under the impetus of the ever-widening outreach of the Internet, is undergoing a transition. In the meantime, there's also been a shift to the information paradigm, with its emphasis on lack of foresight. These processes have almost completely supplanted the concept of market that was once one of the most cardinal features of conventional economic theory. In Toward a General Theory of Exchange: Strategic Decisions and Complexity, author Dr. Javaid R. Khwaja traces the slow melting of the market, the most ubiquitous contraption and the summum bonum of economic science, as an organized manifestation of complexity, with its wide-ranging impact on the flow of funds. Using the historical background of economic theories, this study blends the interdisciplinary range and fills the vacuum that has existed among current conventional economic theory, the theory of strategic decision making, actor-network theory, the domain of law and economics, and the science of complexity. An observer of economic development for several decades, Khwaja shows the relationship between technology and economics and how it affects social exchanges and trends.
