Professor Smith on the Bible
Author: James Smith
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267516681
Category : Religion

Pages : 64
Book Description
Excerpt from Professor Smith on the Bible: And Dr. Marcus Dods on Inspiration The first period extends from the time of Moses to that of Ezra, during which there was a continual conflict between spiritual religion and various forms of polytheism. The spiritual religion was compelled during this conflict to prove itself capable of growth and development, so as to vindicate its superiority to the false systems. In Ezra's time the spiritual religion triumphed. From Joshua to Samuel we find a state of political disintegration and tribal jealousy, during which the worship of Jehovah was kept from being lost by the priesthood serving at the sanctuary of the ark. From the priestly ranks Samuel arose as a reformer to reunite the nation and revive the true worship. He did this, however, not as a priest, but as a prophet. (634 a.)
