A meeting of the Zonal Assessment Process (ZAP) on wolffish for the Newfoundland and Labrador (NL), Maritimes, Gulf, Qub̌ec, and Central and Arctic Regions was held February 26-27, 2014 in St. John?s, NL. Presentations included the latest findings on abundance indices for Northern Wolffish (Anarhichas denticulatus), Spotted Wolffish (A. minor), and Atlantic Wolffish (A. lupus) in all Regions; estimated rates of wolffish bycatch; evaluation of bycatch fishery observer coverage; and results from preliminary telemetry and habitat use research. Population projections and recovery targets were calculated and presented, however the results were rejected due to poor model fit and lack of confidence in gear conversion factors. A Science Advisory Report (SAR) was prepared by Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Science and reviewed during these meetings. It includes summary points for all wolffish species, written and reviewed at the ZAP, based on the meeting Terms of Reference (Appendix I). This Proceedings Report includes an abstract and summary of discussions for each working paper presented, and a summary of general discussions and meeting conclusions.

This paper presents the most recent information on trends in abundance, distribution, and fishery removals of Anarhichus denticulatus (Northern Wolffish), A. minor (Spotted Wolffish), and A. lupus (Atlantic Wolffish) in the Northwest Atlantic and Arctic Oceans in support of an allowable harm assessment of these species. Previously, all three species were listed on Schedule 1 of Canada?s Species at Risk Act (SARA) as being at risk, due to significant declines in relative abundance indices and reduction in area occupied during the 1980s and early 1990s. Their SARA status was upheld in November 2012 by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC).

Carrion, or dead animal matter, is an inherent component of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems worldwide, and is exploited by a wide diversity of organisms from different trophic levels, including microbes, arthropods and vertebrates. Further, carrion consumption by scavengers, i.e. scavenging, supports key ecosystem functions and services such as recycling nutrients and energy, disposing of carcasses and regulating disease spread. Yet, unlike dead plant matter, dead animal decomposition has received little attention in the fields of ecology, wildlife conservation and environmental management, and as a result the management of carrion for maintaining biodiversity and functional ecosystems has been limited. This book addresses the main ecological patterns and processes relating to the generation and consumption of carrion both in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. It also discusses a number of conservation concerns and associated management issues, particularly regarding the increasing role of human-mediated carrion in ecosystems. Lastly, the book outlines future research lines in carrion ecology and management, and identifies the major challenges for scavengers and scavenging processes in the Anthropocene.
