Book Description
This newly revised fourth edition of Postharvest Handling brings new and updated chapters with new knowledge and applications from postharvest research. The revised edition brings back the aspects of preharvest conditions and their effects on postharvest quality and features new chapters on the increasingly important role of transportation and logistics. It emphasizes consumers and systems thinking for postharvest chains for fresh produce. This book also explores current challenges—including oversupply, waste, food safety, lack of resources, sustainability — and best practices for systems to thrive in spite of these challenges. This unique resource provides an overview of postharvest systems and their role in food value chains and offers essential tools to monitor and control the handling process. Written by a team of experts in Postharvest Systems and Handling, this book continues to be the most practical and up-to-date resource for postharvest physiologists and technologists across the disciplines of agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, food science, and horticulture along with businesses handling fresh or minimally processed products. Features new chapters on packaging, transportation and logistics, and postharvest in the context of systems approach Brings aspects of pre-harvest conditions and their effects on postharvest quality Provides an overview of the postharvest system and its role in the food value chain, offering essential tools to monitor and control the handling process

Book Description
Fruits and vegetables are very important food commodities. For self-sufficiency and also for processing, export and to meet additional requirements, a lot of emphasis need to be given to reduce post-harvest losses, besides increasing production and productivity of horticultural produces. Processing plays an important role in conservation and effective utilisation of these perishable commodities. Many recent innovations in postharvest technology in have been in response to the desire to avoid the use of costly labor and the desire for cosmetically "perfect" produce. These methods may not be sustainable over the long term, due to socioeconomic, cultural and/or environmental concerns. For example, the use of postharvest pesticides may reduce the incidence of surface defects but can be costly both in terms of money and environmental consequences. In addition, the growing demand for organically produced fruits and vegetables offers new opportunities for small-scale producers and marketers. Local conditions for small-scale handlers may include labor surpluses, lack of credit for investments in postharvest technology, unreliable electric power supply, lack of transport options, storage facilities and/or packaging materials, as well as a host of other constraints. This book will be of immense valuable for research professionals, quality control personnel and postharvest biology students anyone involved in the technology for handling and storing fresh fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals.

Book Description
The ultimate goal of crop production is to provide quality produce to consumers at reasonable rates. Most fresh produce is highly perishable, and postharvest losses are significant under the present methods of management in many countries. However, significant achievements have been made during the last few years to curtail postharvest losses in fresh produce and to ensure food security and safety as well. These include advancements in breeding horticultural crops for quality improvement; postharvest physiology; postharvest pathology and entomology; postharvest management of fruits, vegetables, and flowers; nondestructive technologies to assess produce quality; minimal processing of fruits and vegetables; as well as innovations in packaging and storage technology of fresh produce. This new book, Postharvest Biology and Technology of Horticultural Crops: Principles and Practices for Quality Maintenance, describes the above-mentioned advancements in postharvest quality improvement of fresh horticultural produce. This book will be a standard reference work for postharvest management for the fresh produce industry. It presents important new advances that will extend the shelf life of fresh produce by retaining its safety and nutritional or sensory quality. The book covers a multitude of topics, particularly advances in: • Conventional breeding approaches for fruits and vegetables • Storage of fruits and vegetables • Postharvest treatment and smart packaging • Management of pests and other postharvest diseases • Postharvest management of fresh-cut flowers • Management of medicinal and aromatic plants during postharvest • Biotechnological methods for postharvest management
