Besides these, two successful summer schools, with aid from the Peabody Fund, were held. One was at the Peabody Teachers' College under the management of the President of the College, who had as his assistants, with two exceptions, the faculty of the college. This was a great success. Four hundred and fifty teachers were enrolled. The result of the work created a demand for a permanent summer school. At Knoxville the astonishing number of over two thousand teachers were gathered at the University of Tennessee for white students. At the Knoxville College was a nchool at the same time for colored teachers. Dr. Stanley Hall said, "It is the largest summer school in the world. In num ber and interest it has never been surpassed." The President of the Southern Educational Board, says, "It has been far above and beyond anything that was anticipated." Every State in the South was represented on the program by instructors and lecturers, 'and the greatest enthusiasm was manifested in the courses offered. A great educational rally was held on the Fourth of July, when, with bands of music and flying banners, an army of women marched through the grounds of the University and listened to patriotic addresses on education. A declaration of principles was made favoring a publicschool system which shall be State-supported and Statedirected, and under which every child may have the "open door of opportunity;" endorsing local taxation and increased expenditure of money for school purposes, the development of schools along agricultural and mechanical lines, the consolidation of schools, and the professional training of teachers. The most distinguished of America's citizens, whose death elicited such expressions of personal respect and of nationality and loyalty, as President, as Trustee, as private citizen, was urgent in advocacy of this paramount measure of relief and safety. In an address, in 1875, before the Society of the Army of the Tennessee, General Grant used this language: "In a republic like ours, where the citizen is the sovereign and the official the servant, where no power is exercised except by the will of the people, it is important that the sovereign--the people--should possess intelligence. The free school is the promoter of that intelligence which is to preserve us as afree nation. If we are to have another contest in the near future of our national existence, I predict that the dividing line will not be Mason and Dixon's line, but between patriotism and intelligence on the one side, and superstition, ambition, and ignorance on the other. Now, in this centennial year, I believe it a good time to begin the work of strengthening the foundation of the house commenced by our patriotic forefathers one hundred years ago at Concord and Lexington. Let us all labor to add all needful guaranties for the more perfect security of free thought, free speech, free press, pure morals, unfettered religious sentiment, and of equal rights and privileges to all men, irrespective of nationality, color, or religion. Encourage free schools, and resolve that not one dollar of money appropriated to their support, no matter hoW raised, shall be appropriated to the support of any sectarian school.
