Our world is being revolutionized by data-driven methods: access to large amounts of data has generated new insights and opened exciting new opportunities in commerce, science, and computing applications. Processing the enormous quantities of data necessary for these advances requires large clusters, making distributed computing paradigms more crucial than ever. MapReduce is a programming model for expressing distributed computations on massive datasets and an execution framework for large-scale data processing on clusters of commodity servers. The programming model provides an easy-to-understand abstraction for designing scalable algorithms, while the execution framework transparently handles many system-level details, ranging from scheduling to synchronization to fault tolerance. This book focuses on MapReduce algorithm design, with an emphasis on text processing algorithms common in natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning. We introduce the notion of MapReduce design patterns, which represent general reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems across a variety of problem domains. The Proceedings include 83 refereed papers submitted from 19 countries on 4 continents. 00 The spread of papers in this volume reflects four developments since the 32 MATADOR Conference in 1997: (i) the power of information technology to integrate the management and control of manufacturing systems; (ii) international manufacturing enterprises; (iii) the use of computers to integrate different aspects of manufacturing technology; and, (iv) new manufacturing technologies. New developments in the manufacturing systems area are globalisation and the use of the Web to achieve virtual enterprises. In manufacturing technology the potential of the following processes is being realised: rapid proto typing, laser processing, high-speed machining, and high-speed machine tool design. And, at the same time in the area of controls and automation, the flexibility and integration ability of open architecture computer controllers are creating a wide range of opportunities for novel solutions. Up-to-date research results in these and other areas are presented in this volume. The Proceedings reflect the truly international nature of this Conference and the way in which original research results are both collected and disseminated.
