Book Description
Excerpt from Proceedings of the International Conference on Aerial Navigation: Held in Chicago, August 1, 2, 3 and 4, 1893 The proposal to hold an International Conference on Aerial Navigation in Chicago during the Columbian Exposition first originated with Professor A. F.Zahm, of Ndtre Dame University. He conferred with Mr. C. C. Bonney, President of the World's Congress Auxiliary, an organization under the auspices of the World's Columbian Exposition, intended to promote the meeting of various congresses; then be interested various persons in the project, and in December, 1898, a committee of organization was formed. This committee, in consultation with President Bonney, decided to hold the Conference during the same week as the Engineering Congress, in order to secure the attendance of engineers at the discussions; and the following circular was Issued: Not things, but men. President, Charles C.Bonney. Treasurer, Lyman J.Gage. Vice-President, Thomas B.Bryan. Secretary, Benjamin Bntterworth. The Worlds Congress Auxiliary Of The Worlds Columbian Exposition Of 1893. Department of Engineering. General Division of Aerial Navigation. Preliminary Address Of The Worlds Congress Committee On An International Conference On Aerial Naviga-Tion. In connection with the various congresses which will be held next year, under the auspices of the Worlds Congress Auxiliary, it is proposed to hold in Chicago, in 1893, an Inter national Conference on AeiJal Navigation, somewhat similar to that which took place in Paris during the French Exposition of 1889;the subject being one which, while it has hitherto been left chiefly in the hands of the more imaginative inventors (perhaps in consequence of the prodigious mechanical difficulties which it involves), has of later years attracted the attention of some scientific men and engineers. Book Description
This book is a must-read for all those interested in the evolution of airplanes. Its protagonist, Octave Chanute, is best known for his scientific and collaborative approach to the engineering problems related to the development of flight and for the support he gave to the many aeronautical pioneers, including the Wright Brothers. But, as the author clearly demonstrates, this engineer’s contributions in the aeronautical field have frequently been underestimated, even though almost every famous and not so famous aeronautical enthusiast contacted him and used the readily available drawings of his glider to build and then learn to fly in their own design. Chanute’s biplane glider design, developed and flown first in 1896 in the Indiana Dunes along Lake Michigan, proved to be a key step in the evolution of the flying machine. By freely sharing not only drawings of the general design of this aircraft but also the lessons learned, the biplane became the starting point or prototype for many experimenters and can be considered the foundation for the modern airplane. This book focuses on Chanute’s work in aeronautics. Not having the internet of today, he became the “post-box of early aeronautics,” not only because of his landmark book “Progress in Flying Machines” but also because of his strong connections to anyone and everyone who worked in the aeronautical field. He made a point of continuing to learn throughout his own life, and strongly believed in sharing knowledge, while fostering and mentoring all those who were willing to learn.

Book Description
Following the successful 1st CEAS (Council of European Aerospace Societies) Specialist Conference on Guidance, Navigation and Control (CEAS EuroGNC) held in Munich, Germany in 2011, Delft University of Technology happily accepted the invitation of organizing the 2nd CEAS EuroGNC in Delft, The Netherlands in 2013. The goal of the conference is to promote new advances in aerospace GNC theory and technologies for enhancing safety, survivability, efficiency, performance, autonomy and intelligence of aerospace systems using on-board sensing, computing and systems. A great push for new developments in GNC are the ever higher safety and sustainability requirements in aviation. Impressive progress was made in new research fields such as sensor and actuator fault detection and diagnosis, reconfigurable and fault tolerant flight control, online safe flight envelop prediction and protection, online global aerodynamic model identification, online global optimization and flight upset recovery. All of these challenges depend on new online solutions from on-board computing systems. Scientists and engineers in GNC have been developing model based, sensor based as well as knowledge based approaches aiming for highly robust, adaptive, nonlinear, intelligent and autonomous GNC systems. Although the papers presented at the conference and selected in this book could not possibly cover all of the present challenges in the GNC field, many of them have indeed been addressed and a wealth of new ideas, solutions and results were proposed and presented. For the 2nd CEAS Specialist Conference on Guidance, Navigation and Control the International Program Committee conducted a formal review process. Each paper was reviewed in compliance with good journal practice by at least two independent and anonymous reviewers. The papers published in this book were selected from the conference proceedings based on the results and recommendations from the reviewers.
