The accompanying graph shows the percentage of the Louisiana sugarcane acreage in disease-resistant varie ties for the period 1928 to 1945. From it, it is apparent that since 1930 marked progress has been made in devel oping varieties with greater resistance to mosaic, root rot and stubble deterioration. With respect to mosaic, this has been accomplished largely through the replacement of the susceptible P. O. J. Varieties, and more recently Co. 281, with resistant ones, leaving Co. 290 as the only susceptible variety that is now widely grown. In the western section of the district, where this variety predominates, mosaic generally has been well controlled in it through roughing. Excerpt from Proceedings, American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, 1971-1973: Volume 1-3 Sugarcane was grown in plots 18 x feet in size on Mhoon clay loam soil for a four - year period, 1967 through 1970, at Baton Rouge. Responses of the sugarcane to a water table constantly maintained at 24, 32, 40, or 48 inches below the soil surface throughout the season were recorded. Cane yields showed no significant difference among the water table treatments; however, yields from the treated plots were approximately 60 percent more than yields from check plots. Moreover, cane yields from the treated plots were consistently above 35 net tons per acre through third stubble. This is highly significant since cane yields usually decrease to such a low level after second stubble that third stubble crops are not normally grown in Louisiana. All four water table treatments increased vegetative growth over that from check plots but decreased the sucrose of the cane's juice; however, the higher cane yields from the treated plots more than compensated for the reduced sucrose and the sugar yield per acre was consequently significantly increased by the water table treatments. Excerpt from Journal; American Society of Sugar Cane Technologists, Vol. 20: Florida and Louisiana Divisions; June 2000 Sugarcane stalks from each plot were mechanically harvested and piled in early December Of 1993 and 1994. Dried leaf material (crop and weed) was removed from the piles Of harvested stalks by burning prior to weighing the stalks to determine gross cane yields from the plant-cane crop of each experiment. A sample consisting of 15 harvested stalks selected at random was removed from each plot, weighed to determine average stalk weight, and then crushed in a three-roller mill. Theoretically recoverable sugar (trs) levels contained in the extracted juice were determined following analyses of the juice for its Brix (percent by weight of soluble solids) and pol (percent apparent sucrose by weight) contents using standard methods.
