Book Description
The book presents timely and needed contributions on privacy and data protection seals as seen from general, legal, policy, economic, technological, and societal perspectives. It covers data protection certification in the EU (i.e., the possibilities, actors and building blocks); the Schleswig-Holstein Data Protection Seal; the French Privacy Seal Scheme; privacy seals in the USA, Europe, Japan, Canada, India and Australia; controversies, challenges and lessons for privacy seals; the potential for privacy seals in emerging technologies; and an economic analysis. This brand new title includes coverage of: - The establishment and wider powers of the new data regulators - The new sanctions, orders, penalties and powers to enforce compliance - The new obligations to contact data regulators even before data collections - The detailed GDPR and DPA powers and requirements - Recent fines, penalties and case law including CJEU This book is essential for any entity dealing with the new data protection and privacy issues as no company, organisation nor their internal or external advisors, can ignore these new regulators, nor fully understand the new data protection and privacy compliance landscape without a detailed appreciation of these regulators.

Book Description
Privacy, dignity, equality, and non-discrimination are fundamental values upon which the European Union was founded. They are firmly embedded in the Treaties of the European Union, the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, and secondary legislation. Combatting discrimination in the labour market and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities are core obligations of the European Union. Not many are aware that more than 15 per cent of the total potential workforce of the European Union has some form of disability - of which over 50 per cent are unemployed. This is all the more reason for the EU to maintain its commitment to include these indivuduals in the labour force and to guarantee their fair treatment and protection of their particularly sensitive data. It is precisely in this light that The Crossroads: Privacy, Disability and Employment must be seen: a sort of driving manual for disability organizations. It will be important to collect, process and handle personal data and to embrace new technologies without compromising privacy in the process. This manual also provides the various stakeholders with relevant articles of the GDPR and other legislative texts to equip them with sufficient knowledge and useful tools to ensure and to successfully navigate the crossroads between privacy and employment for persons with disabilities. Enrique Opi Tufet is an “actibilist”, a term he coined some time ago to describe an activist on disability issues. He has an LL.M. in International Law from Vrije Universiteit Brussel and he is a certified Data Protection Officer (DPO) by Maastricht University. Currently, Enrique acts as a Regional Director of Inserta/Fundación ONCE in Spain, an employment and disability program funded by the European Social Fund. He himself has a visual disability and is therefore intimately familiar with the challenges persons with disabilities face. Before Inserta, Enrique was the Corporate Vice President and General Counsel of Epson Europe. Previously, he led the Brussels operations of two major worldwide public relations agencies. He has written a number of articles and contributions addressing environmental policy, sustainability and communications. Enrique lives in Barcelona with his wife and son.

Book Description
This book brings together papers that offer conceptual analyses, highlight issues, propose solutions, and discuss practices regarding privacy, data protection and Artificial Intelligence. It is one of the results of the thirteenth annual International Conference on Computers, Privacy and Data Protection (CPDP) held in Brussels in January 2020. The development and deployment of Artificial Intelligence promises significant break-throughs in how humans use data and information to understand and interact with the world. The technology, however, also raises significant concerns. In particular, concerns are raised as to how Artificial Intelligence will impact fundamental rights. This interdisciplinary book has been written at a time when the scale and impact of data processing on society – on individuals as well as on social systems – is becoming ever starker. It discusses open issues as well as daring and prospective approaches and is an insightful resource for readers with an interest in computers, privacy and data protection.

Book Description
This book is about enforcing privacy and data protection. It demonstrates different approaches – regulatory, legal and technological – to enforcing privacy. If regulators do not enforce laws or regulations or codes or do not have the resources, political support or wherewithal to enforce them, they effectively eviscerate and make meaningless such laws or regulations or codes, no matter how laudable or well-intentioned. In some cases, however, the mere existence of such laws or regulations, combined with a credible threat to invoke them, is sufficient for regulatory purposes. But the threat has to be credible. As some of the authors in this book make clear – it is a theme that runs throughout this book – “carrots” and “soft law” need to be backed up by “sticks” and “hard law”. The authors of this book view privacy enforcement as an activity that goes beyond regulatory enforcement, however. In some sense, enforcing privacy is a task that befalls to all of us. Privacy advocates and members of the public can play an important role in combatting the continuing intrusions upon privacy by governments, intelligence agencies and big companies. Contributors to this book - including regulators, privacy advocates, academics, SMEs, a Member of the European Parliament, lawyers and a technology researcher – share their views in the one and only book on Enforcing Privacy.

Book Description
Information about people is becoming increasingly valuable. Enabled by new technologies, organizations collect and process personal data on a large scale. Free flow of data across Europe is vital for the common market, but it also presents a clear risk to the fundamental rights of individuals. This issue was addressed by the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For many organizations processing personal data, the GDPR came as a shock. Not so much its publication in the spring of 2016, but rather the articles that appeared about it in professional journals and newspapers leading to protests and unrest. “The heavy requirements of the law would cause very expensive measures in companies and organizations”, was a concern. In addition, companies which failed to comply “would face draconian fines”. This book is intended to explain where these requirements came from and to prove that the GDPR is not incomprehensible, that the principles are indeed remarkably easy to understand. It will help anyone in charge of, or involved in, the processing of personal data to take advantage of the innovative technologies in processing without being unduly hindered by the limitations of the GDPR. The many examples and references to EDPB (European Data Protection Board) publications, recent news articles and case law clarify the requirements of the law and make them accessible and understandable. “Leo’s book can provide very effective support to you and your colleagues in reaching this understanding and applying it in practice.” Fintan Swanton, Managing Director of Cygnus Consulting Ltd., Ireland.

Book Description
This book offers an in-depth analysis of the function of certification in general and of certification systems in a range of different sectors. The authors examine certification from both a theoretical and a practical standpoint and from the perspectives of different disciplines, including law, economics, management, and the social sciences. They also discuss instruments that help ensure the quality of certification, which can range from public law measures such as accreditation, to private law incentives, to deterrents, such as liability towards victims. Further, they assess the role of competition between certification bodies. Readers will learn the commonalities as well as the necessary distinctions between certification bodies in various fields, which may stem from the different functions they serve. These similarities and differences may also be the result of different types of damage that the certified producer or service provider could potentially cause to individuals or to the public at large. Often, companies use certification bodies as an argument to assure the general public, e.g. regarding the safety of medical products. Closer inspection reveals, however, that sometimes certification bodies themselves lack credibility. The book offers essential information on the benefits and pitfalls associated with certification.
