Les accidents domestiques chez l'enfant constituent dans notre société un problème majeur de santé publique, puisqu'ils sont, dès l'âge d'un an, avec les accidents de la voie publique, la première cause de décès, largement devant les autres causes de mort dans l'enfance.(...) RESULTATS : L'étude inclut 181 patients âgés de 1 mois à 5 ans, (âge moyen : 25 ± 15 mois), avec une prédominance masculine (56%).Les chutes représentent le type d'accident domestique le plus fréquemment retrouvé (63%) suivies des intoxications (10%), des corps étrangers (9%) et des brûlures (8%). Ces accidents ont lieu majoritairement dans le salon et la cuisine (35 et 16%). Les accidents domestiques de l'enfant sont un motif de consultation fréquent aux urgences hospitalières (1,3% des consultations totales et 7,3% des consultations des 0-5 ans) bien qu'ils soient le plus souvent bénins (84% de retour à domicile après la consultation) mais parfois plus graves, nécessitant une prise en charge hospitalière (16% d'hospitalisation), fréquemment pendant 24h (62% des hospitalisations). Pour 25% des enfants, des facteurs de risque psychosociaux ont été retrouvés, notamment des difficultés socio-économiques (28%). 14% des patients étaient récidivistes concernant les accidents domestiques. Dans les suites immédiates de l'accident, l'entourage de l'enfant a effectué des gestes (39%), s'agissant dans 45 cas sur 50 de soins adaptés. CONCLUSION : Cette étude a permis de mieux connaître le type, la fréquence et les circonstances de survenue des accidents domestiques amenant à consulter aux urgences hospitalières. Ce travail a abouti à l'élaboration d'une fiche de prévention, destinée à être commentée par le médecin traitant de l'enfant à l'occasion de la visite du 9e mois. Cette échéance obligatoire permet de sensibiliser systématiquement tous les parents, sans exception, à l'âge où leur enfant commence à se déplacer.(..)
