The word 'Kraljevic' means "the young king" or "the king's son" in English. Marko was the regional king of a small principality in present-day Macedonia. As a Turkish vassal, he had to serve Bāyezid I Yildirim, the 'Thunderbolt, ' in various military campaigns and he paid regular dues in tribute. It is widely accepted that King Marko accompanied Sultan Bāyezid in the campaign against a much smaller Wallachian army led by Voivode Mircea cel Bătrân and that he was killed at the battle of Rovine while fighting on the side of the Ottomans, a historical fact hardly likely to win him recognition and high regard from his fellow countrymen. That is to say, although he did not feel in duty bound to die in a battle against the Ottomans as his 'mates' did at the battle of Kosovo plain in 1389, people praised this petty lord as the greatest national hero ever and rewarded him with immortal epic songs throughout the five centuries of Ottoman rule and ever since. It is a psychological puzzle which has stirred historians and literary critics alike to investigate the matter till the present day.

Excerpt: Marko Mrnjav evi (Serbian Cyrillic: Bulgarian Cyrillic ) (c. 1335-1395) was de jure the Serbian king from 1371 to 1395, while de facto he ruled only over a territory in western Macedonia centered on the town of Prilep. He is known as Prince Marko (Serbian: ) and King Marko (Bulgarian: K a ) in Bulgarian and Serbianoral tradition, in which he has become a major character during the Ottoman occupation of the Balkans. Marko's father, King Vuka in, was the co-ruler of Serbian Tsar Stefan Uro V, whose reign was marked by the weakening of the central authority and the gradual disintegration of the Serbian Empire. Vuka in's personal holdings included lands in western Macedonia, Kosovo and Metohija. In 1370 or 1371, he crowned Marko "young king"; this title included the possibility that Marko succeed the childless Uro on the Serbian throne. On 26 September 1371, Vuka in was defeated and killed by the Ottomans in the Battle of Maritsa, and about two months later Tsar Uro died.
