Book Description
The master of the realist novel of nineteenth-century Spain, Benito Pérez Galdós, is the subject of these new studies. The master of the realist novel of nineteenth-century Spain, Benito Pérez Galdós, is the subject of New Galdós Studies, offered in memory of John Varey, author of Galdós Studies, the foundational text for contemporary Galdosian scholarship. Eamonn Rodgers describes Galdós's early readership and reception; James Whiston illustrates Galdós's creativity in Lo prohibido; Rhian Davies explores the enrichment of the novelist's language in Torquemada en la Cruz; Teresa Fuentes Peris demonstrates Galdós's radical critique of dominant social assumptions in Fortunata y Jacinta; Alex Longhurst deals with the representation of poverty in Misericordia while Lisa Condé detects a feminist intention in Tristana; Eric Southworth finds rich cultural and spiritual allusion in the same work; Nichols Round relates the deaths of children in the Torquemada novels and Angel Guerra to end-of-century ideological concerns.

Book Description
One of the stated goals of the Naturalist movement was to present a depiction of life faithful to the empirical method. In practice, however, the works emphasize the more sordid and base elements. This study explains how Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's use of coloration is a consciously manipulated narrative technique instead of a faithful portrayal of reality. In fact, a close examination of the Valencian cycle concludes that the «scientific objectivity» of the Naturalist movement is tenuous, at best, and that Blasco Ibáñez's narratives include more art and artifice than have been recognized heretofore.

Book Description
"Spanish literature includes some of the world's greatest works and authors. It is also one of the most widely studied. This reference looks at the literature of Spain from the perspective of women's studies. Though the volume focuses on the literature of Spain written in Castilian, it also includes survey entries on the present state of women's literature in Catalan, Galician, and Basque. Included are hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries for numerous topics related to Spanish literature, including literary periods and genres, significant characters and character types, major authors and works, and various specialized topics. Each entry discusses how the topic relates to women's studies. Entries for male authors discuss their attitudes toward women. Female writers are considered for the restrictive cultural contexts in which they wrote. Specific works are examined for their representations of female characters and their handling of women's issues. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and closes with a brief bibliography. The volume concludes with a list of works for further reading."--Back cover.
