Excerpt from Storage in Marketing Farmers' Stock Peanuts The need for cash to repay production loans in the fall, and the high short-term interest rates that farmers had to pay in borrowing money from customary sources to finance storage, appear no longer to be the major deterrents to farm storage that they once were. But the negligible amount of storage by farmers suggests the existence of other limiting factors. Important deterrents seem to be associated with the structure and customs of the market, and the problem of reducing their effect or terminating them re quires an analysis of the whole peanut marketing system. The three main types of peanuts-virginia, Runner, and Spanish-are marketed separately by growers as farmers' stock (unshelled and unsorted) peanuts; they usually contain some sticks, leafy trash, pebbles, and sand. The farmers' stock peanuts are cleaned or shelled before being shipped to the end users for manufacture into such con sumer products as peanut butter, roasted and salted peanuts, nut mixes, and candy. In recent years, peanut butter has accounted for about half of the edible -peanut consumption in the United States. For many years excess peanuts have found an outlet as crushing stock for edible oil, but, in recent years, nearly all good quality peanuts have gone directly into food products. Consequently, processors who supply the consumer market are distributed somewhat like the U. S. Population, principally in a number of metropol itan areas. In contrast, peanut production is concentrated in three limited areas-the virginia-carolina, southeastern, and southwestern peanut - producing areas (fig. Farmers market most of their peanuts during a 2-month period following harvest and field curing. The shellers, crushers, and other dealers then store the peanuts as farmers' stock for periods ranging generally from 3 to 8 months. Peanut Acreage, Production and Usage, 1947-65 During the past 10 years, about half of the total edible peanuts have gone into the manufacture of peanut butter, almost one-fourth have been used for salting, and about one - sixth have been used in candy. Virginia-type used in cleaned unshelled form (ball park type) have accounted for less than 10 per cent of the total (table Mbst of the Runner and Spanish types of peanuts are used for peanut butter and most of the shelled Virginia types for salting. Spanish peanuts are the most widely used type for candy manufacture. However, some of each type is utilized in all 3 outlets. The greatest increase in the utilization of peanuts has been in the manue facture of peanut butter. Utilization has increased from.h60 million pounds (farmers' stock basis) in 1955 to an estimated 675 million in l96h. On a per capita basis, the rise was from pounds to pounds. Considerable research is being directed toward improving the quality of peanuts and peanut butter, and there are indications that consumption will continue to increase.
