Excerpt from Annual Report of the President of the University, 1918-1919 Agriculture. - Notable among the activities of the Department of Agriculture during the year have been the expansion of the department's extension activities through the state and the emergency courses of study offered at the University Farm. The details of the department's exten sion activities, as carried on by seventy-five members of the staff em ployed the whole time, and the remaining members employed a consider able part of the time during the last two years, have been set forth at some length in the department's Circulars No. 208 and No. 209. There are now over members of the State Farm Bureaus, holding over 400 meetings in as many Farm Bureau centers monthly. A teacher train ing center for students planning to engage in high school agriculture work has been established at Davis at the request of the California State Board of Education. To date 102 of these so-called emergency students have received instruction both in technical agriculture and in teaching principles and methods. The requirement of the State Board of Educa tion that all high school students benefiting by the smith-hughes fund should conduct a project involving the raising of animals or the produc tion of some crop necessitates the training of teachers to supervise these projects. Beginning June 30, 1919, as a part of the University of California Summer Session, twenty-three teacher training courses in agriculture were offered at the University Farm and certain courses were offered at the Citrus Experiment Station. The outstanding event of the year has been, of course, the coming of Peace. The war service of the College has been described at considerable length in the pamphlet entitled "Barnard's War Service," issued by the Board c Service of Trustees in March, 1919. It is, therefore, not necessary to go into this subject in detail in this report, but a brief survey of some of our activities during the closing months of the War may not be amiss. A training course conducted for its women overseas workers by the Y. M. C. A. in our buildings, with the cooperation of some of our staff, continued from June 20, 1918, until February 19, 1919. During this period 1,998 women were graduated from the one week's intensive course. We followed throughout the year, with the greatest interest and pride, the work of our Barnard alumnae over-seas, especially those in the two Barnard units--one under the Y. M. C. A. in the canteens, the other under the Red Cross, doing reconstruction work. In September the College opened with the promise of many complications and extreme activity in war work. Many of the students had been working during the vacation on farms, in munitions factories, and in war offices, and some were reluctant to return to their studies. About the first of September the Government took over the men's colleges and universities for the Students Army Training Corps. This almost obliterated Columbia College, and profoundly affected all the rest of the University. As we saw all the men's colleges practically transformed into military training schools, many of us naturally questioned whether Barnard and the other colleges for women were...
