Es muy importante para los ingenieros civiles tener un buen control de la cantidad de materiales que se requieren en una obra y lo que realmente se utiliza. Este manejo de materiales significa inventario y un buen manejo da como resultado una obra exitosa debido a que no hay desperdicio de materiales o falta de los mismos. En una construcción es muy difícil saber exactamente el volumen de materiales que se va a utilizar pero con un buen inventario aunado a una plantación correcta nos podemos acercar mucho a lo que se necesita y así tener menos pérdidas. Se presentan muchos casos en los que la situación es extrema debido a que no se tiene inventario o se tiene un exceso del mismo, cuando existe exceso de inventarios generamos situaciones como: tenemos dinero en bodega que se puede perder, es muy difícil tener un control de entrada y salida de los materiales, se necesita mas personal, podemos tener un avance de la obra muy rápido.
