Book Description
Tending to the Holy: The Practice of the Presence of God in Ministry invites pastors to embody their deepest beliefs in the routine and surprising tasks of ministry. Inspired by Brother Lawrence's classic text in spirituality, Tending to the Holy integrates the wisdom and practices of the Christian spiritual tradition with the commonplace practices of pastoral ministry. Bruce and Katherine Epperly utilize a variety of spiritual disciplines especially Benedictine, Celtic, Ignatian, Rhineland, and process spiritualities to provide a framework for helping clergy nurture the awareness of God, creative imagination, and personal well-being in every aspect of their ministerial lives. Practicing God's presence in the ordinary tasks of ministry inspires wholeness, spiritual transformation, vision, imagination, endurance, and healthy self-differentiation in ministry. Commitment to joining spiritual practices with the routine and repetitive tasks of ministry provides an important antidote to unhealthy stress, burnout, and loss of vision in ministry. By seeing their congregational leadership in terms of spiritual transformation, imaginative practice, and relational interdependence, ordinary ministerial practices can become ways pastors can deepen their relationship with God. Growing out of their work with pastors at every season of ministry, as well as combined ministerial experience of nearly sixty years, Bruce and Katherine Epperly invite pastoral leaders to complement and expand on their understanding of spiritual leadership, pastoral excellence, and self-care, integrating traditional and contemporary spiritual practices with the concrete arts of ministry.

Book Description
Practicing Ministry in the Presence of God presents a new paradigm for church ministry--one that is based on fundamental truths of the Christian faith such as the Trinity, union with Christ, and the "already" presence of the Holy Spirit in the church. This new paradigm can help busy pastors avoid "burnout" in the ministry and model Trinitarian, New Testament patterns of ministry to their people. Practicing Ministry in the Presence of God reflects the best of recent New Testament scholarship, sensitivity to the contexts of globalized postmodern cultures dominated by digital media, and practical applications for Christian life, discipleship, worship, and mission.

Book Description
“Contemplative Youth Ministry is refreshing rain for dry youth workers and barren youth ministries. More than the same old youth ministry tips and tricks, it gives principles and practices to soak in God’s grace, love, and power. I wish I had read it 15 years ago.” - Kara Powell, Ph.D., executive director, Center for Youth Ministry and Family Ministry, Fuller Theological Seminary “Mark invites readers to be encountered by the presence of Jesus who is always near. This book is transparent about the challenges that churches and families face as they desire to be effective in youth ministry. The book is filled with the honest stories of different kinds of youth ministries representing the breadth of Christianity in the United States. I heartily endorse Contemplative Youth Ministry as a rich encounter with the souls of youth and adults whose lives have been transformed by our very present God.” - Bill Kees, director of youth ministries, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) “Mark Yaconelli not only reminds us of some of the long-forgotten pathways of faith, he shares with us how it actually looks when men and women who love God practice it with young people. I especially appreciate Mark’s optimism in his perspective of today’s kids, for his insights are grounded in God’s view of them.” - Chap Clark, Ph.D., associate professor of youth, family, and culture, Fuller Theological Seminary “Mark Yaconelli was experimenting with contemplative youth ministry practices before contemplative youth ministry practices became cool. This book has about it the unique air of authenticity. He shares with us in these pages his own journey as a youth worker who actually believes that God’s still small voice speaks louder than the roaring windstorm of our busy youth ministry calendars. It’s a book about creating for our students places of silence and opening up spaces for God to speak.” - Duffy Robbins, professor of youth ministry, Eastern University; author of Enjoy the Silence and This Way to Youth Ministry “Mark Yaconelli has emerged as one of youth ministry’s most provocative ‘voices in the wilderness,’ calling us back to our theological taproots: The contemplative practices that bind our lives to the life of Christ. If Mark’s research has taught us anything, it’s that these practices do not cause youth ministry to take fl ight into a spiritual never-never land; rather they anchor young people—and their churches—in the fertile soil of Christian tradition, in the nitty-gritty of daily life, and in the explosive transformation that awaits us when we wait upon God.” - Kenda Creasy Dean, parent, pastor, and professor of youth, Princeton Theological Seminary; author of Practicing Passion: Youth and the Quest for a Passionate Church

Book Description
When my siblings, Betsy, John and Wick, cleaned out my father's lake house, they found and saved for me files of his many sermons dating back to 1955, as well as three unpublished manuscripts that he had submitted to fulfill his Doctor of Ministry degree. Practicing the Presence of God by my father, the Rev. Dr. James R. Bell, is the manuscript that best represents his life-long career as a minister faithfully serving Christ in his community. In his book he tells us how to live more meaningful and exciting lives by bringing the presence of Christ to others and finding guidance on how to do so in the Scriptures. To this day, even while suffering the onslaught of dementia at age 92, he ministers to those confined to the Alzheimer unit of the assisted living facility that has become his home since the death of his wife in 2009. Perhaps we children suffer more watching our father slip away before our eyes. He was a brilliant minister, received his Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1943, served as chaplain in the Pacific during WWII; and for over twenty years served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Flourtown, Pennsylvania, with his devoted wife, Betty, by his side. He preached well into his late eighties and carried his Bible everywhere he went. It is with deep gratitude for his life that we share this manuscript with you.
