Book Description
Averting Climate Catastrophe Together addresses the necessity of meeting the Paris Agreement temperature target and explores what framework could enable climate action in an effective, efficient and equitable manner that is consistent with that goal. It also looks at the contribution of technological change within the economic system, including the feasibility of a global energy transition. Whether humanity can avoid catastrophic climate change does not seem to depend on the availability of technological solutions, but rather on international cooperation and coordination. Given the various sustainability issues, this book also considers if it is possible to derive a general approach to them. It argues that dealing with compatibility limits in complex systems requires a holistic change in the system structure. Therefore, systems science is discussed together with economics, technological change, and sustainable development. This book targets scientists and experts from different disciplines due to the interdisciplinary topic, but especially from environmental economics and energy technology; policy makers, as policy recommendations are provided to address climate change; as well as the general public due to the pressing common challenge of climate change and comprehensive efforts for sustainable development. Provides evidence based on climate science research on the necessity of meeting the Paris Agreement temperature target Highlights the feasibility of the global energy transition as one major option to mitigate climate change, also going into detail about the process of technological change Brings together systems science with economics, technological change, and sustainable development Derives a framework to meet the Paris Agreement temperature target, enabling coordinated climate action in an effective and efficient manner while pursuing distributive justice

Book Description
With the signing of the Paris Agreement in December 2015 the United Nations explained their willingness to limit the GHG Emissions and contribute to the measures against the global warming effect. In 2019 the European Commission proposed the Green Deal and as a consequence the target to be climate neutral in 2050. In consequence the fossil based energy system has to transform into a climate-neutral energy system with renewable and sustainable energy carriers. Research on and development of alternative fuels and new production processes are ongoing to provide the technical solution. Political actions are needed to provide the economic framework for the introduction of such alternative fuel solutions. The fulfilment of the European CO2 reduction targets until 2050 needs realistic technical solutions including backwards compatible approaches for existing vehicle fleets. An economic and sustainable development towards climate neutral mobility requires a holistic view based on life cycle assessments for the different mobility approaches including the economic impacts as well as financing options. A synergetic discussion of solutions for future fuels and powertrain technologies is needed to develop an economic pathway to a sustainable and affordable mobility of tomorrow. The challenging goal for mobility can only be achieved through an international cooperation of universities, the automobile industry, energy producers, the oil industry and the legislative bodies of the member states. The international colloquium aims to contribute to the development of a climate-neutral mobility by exchanging views on and discussing all aspects connected with the "powertrain/fuel/environment" system, including the necessary political regulations.

Book Description
Electrochemical Power Sources: Fundamentals, Systems, and Applications: Hydrogen Production by Water Electrolysis offers a comprehensive overview about different hydrogen production technologies, including their technical features, development stage, recent advances, and technical and economic issues of system integration. Allied processes such as regenerative fuel cells and sea water electrolysis are also covered. For many years hydrogen production by water electrolysis was of minor importance, but research and development in the field has increased significantly in recent years, and a comprehensive overview is missing. This book bridges this gap and provides a general reference to the topic.Hydrogen production by water electrolysis is the main technology to integrate high shares of electricity from renewable energy sources and balance out the supply and demand match in the energy system. Different electrochemical approaches exist to produce hydrogen from RES (Renewable Energy Sources). - Covers the fundamentals of hydrogen production by water electrolysis - Reviews all relevant technologies comprehensively - Outlines important technical and economic issues of system integration - Includes commercial examples and demonstrates electrolyzer projects
