Book Description
Modern poultry production now has the ability to control most infectious diseases and it is evident that the economically significant issues relating to poultry health and welfare world-wide are non-infectious, most commonly referred to as metabolic disorders. General mortality of both meat birds and laying hens seem to affect birds with the greatest growth rate or the highest egg output, and is now most commonly due to disorders of various biological systems. Metabolic disorders such as those impacting skeletal development have also now become important animal welfare issues in many countries. This book addresses the problems of all the significant metabolic disorders such as ascites, sudden death syndrome, liver and kidney problems and skeletal disorders. In some instances we have indicated methods of treatment or prevention. Metabolic disorders by their very nature are a perennial challenge to efficient modern poultry production. Their control requires astute management and a nutritional strategy geared towards health maintenance and general disease avoidance in poultry. We hope that the information provided in this book can contribute to a better understanding and management of metabolic disorders in poultry.

Mycotoxins Problem and its Management
Author: S.M. Reddy
Publisher: Scientific Publishers
ISBN: 9386347679
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 529
Book Description
Mycotoxins, secondary metabolites of storage moulds, have been receiving increasing attention in view of their undisputed role in public health. Many books appeared, conferences in different parts of the globe are being conducted which clearly indicate direct relation between the incidence of mycotoxigenic fungi, degree of mycotoxin contamination and their prevalence revealed their relation to some of the human ailments. Out of several mycotoxins, aflatoxins, ochratoxins A and fumonisins are posing serious health hazards specially in Asian countries. Inspite of intensive and extensive studies related to mycotoxins the problems becoming intricate and intriguing and decisive conclusions could not be drawn and clear cut solutions are provided. This book is divided into two parts. First part deals with general aspects of mycotoxins covering areas of natural incidence, taxonomy of mycotoxigenic fungi, analytical techniques, and mechanism of mycotoxins, toxicity epidemiology and management of mycotoxins. The second part deals with individual mycotoxins. The detailed account of producing organisms, detection, biological activity and management practices specific to that of mycotoxins are discussed in individual chapters. An attempt has been made to discuss mycotoxins problem with reference to Indian conditions. In view of voluminous literature only comparatively recent and relevant literature is quoted and may be some important works might have been omitted.

Haschek and Rousseaux's Handbook of Toxicologic Pathology
Author: Wanda M. Haschek
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 0080491448
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 2160
Book Description
A comprehensive understanding of toxicologic pathology is essential for those in industry, academia, and government who make decisions concerning the safety and efficacy of drugs and chemicals. Toxicologic pathology relies heavily on the fields of both toxicology and pathology, which are well covered individually in various texts and references; however, there are few texts that address the field of toxicologic pathology. The Handbook of Toxicologic Pathology fills this void and is thus essential for all health professionals within or interacting with the field of toxicologic pathology. This two-volume set provides the reader with a single reference for toxicologic pathology. In volume I, the book covers toxicologic pathology in its basic aspects, including its definition, the basic biochemical and morphologic mechanisms underlying the discipline, the basic practice of toxicologic pathology (including special techniques) and issues essential to the understanding of toxicologic pathology such as risk assessment, experimental design, and statistical analysis. Next, the book moves to specific issues affecting the "practice" toxicologic pathology, including issues such as knowledge management, regulatory affairs and writing pathology reports. Finally, Volume I closes with several chapters that deal with specific classes of environmental toxicants such as endocrine disruptors and heavy metals. Volume II addresses the toxicologic pathology in a thoroughly standardized systems manner, addressing the basic structure and function of a particular organ system, its response to toxic injury, mechanisms of injury and methods of evaluation of such injury. Key Features * Easy to find, up-to-date reference information * Graphic and photographic plates * Current hot topics and anticipated changes in toxicologic pathology * Standardized chapter format * Topics that are addressed in both a broad and deep manner, resulting in a stand alone text * Added coverage of important environmental toxicants * Chapters authored by internationally recognized experts and peer-reviewed

ISBN: 9533077115
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 380
Book Description
This book is divided into three sections. The section called Aflatoxin Contamination discusses the importance that this subject has for a country like the case of China and mentions examples that illustrate the ubiquity of aflatoxins in various commodities The section Measurement and Analysis, describes the concept of measurement and analysis of aflatoxins from a historical prespective, the legal, and the state of the art in methodologies and techniques. Finally the section entitled Approaches for Prevention and Control of Aflatoxins on Crops and on Different Foods, describes actions to prevent and mitigate the genotoxic effect of one of the most conspicuous aflatoxins, AFB1. In turn, it points out interventions to reduce identified aflatoxin-induced illness at agricultural, dietary and strategies that can control aflatoxin. Besides the preventive management, several approaches have been employed, including physical, chemical biological treatments and solvent extraction to detoxify AF in contaminated feeds and feedstuffs.
