Book Description
Position Sensing: Angle and Distance Measurement for Engineers focuses on the electrical measurement of angles and distances. The publication first elaborates on industrial principles and sensors and measurement systems. Discussions focus on measurement technology, terms used in information technology, methods of measurement, analogue angle and displacement sensors, features of processes using a digital-incremental measurement base, electromechanical position sensing systems, and capacitive scanning. Carrier frequency scanning, electromagnetic pulse generator, photoelectric position sensing systems, distance measurement by the pulse-time delay method, laser gyroscope, and systems with analogue measurement and subsequent analogue-to-digital conversion are also discussed. The manuscript then examines intelligent sensors and connection of measurement systems. Topics cover electrical couplings for fine and coarse measurement systems, mechanical links for converting longitudinal to angular motion, general properties of intelligent sensors, and interconnection of intelligent sensors. The text is highly recommended for mechanical engineers and measurement and control technicians.

Book Description
A resource on position sensor technology, including background, operational theory, design and applications This book explains the theory and applications of the technologies used in the measurement of linear and angular/rotary position sensors. The first three chapters provide readers with the necessary background information on sensors. These chapters review: the working definitions and conventions used in sensing technology; the specifications of linear position transducers and sensors and how they affect performance; and sensor output types and communication protocols. The remaining chapters discuss each separate sensor technology in detail. These include resistive sensors, cable extension transducers, capacitive sensors, inductive sensors, LVDT and RVDT sensors, distributed impedance sensors, Hall Effect sensors, magnetoresistive sensors, magnetostrictive sensors, linear and rotary encoders, and optical triangulation position sensors. Discusses sensor specification, theory of operation, sensor design, and application criteria Reviews the background history of the linear and angular/rotary position sensors as well as the underlying engineering techniques Includes end-of-chapter exercises Position Sensors is written for electrical, mechanical, and material engineers as well as engineering students who are interested in understanding sensor technologies.

Book Description
Position sensing is a key fundamental technology for any engineering or scientific related studies. Currently, the need for nanometer displacement measurement is increasing due to emerging nanotechnology applications. Capacitive displacement sensor (CDS) is one of the displacement sensing methods that has relatively low-cost, high-resolution, high-bandwidth characteristics, and has a capability to obtain nanometer level resolution. Digital signal processors, DSPs, in combination with analog to digital conversion hardware, are capable of providing analog signal conditioning, non-linear compensation, real-time control, numerical analysis and data transfer to a host computer for systems integration. The overall objective of the project is to develop marketable, DSP-based, high performance, easily integrated capacitive displacement sensors for precision positioning applications. In this thesis, three CDSs were designed, manufactured, integrated and evaluated for "a probe system for in-process hole measurement," "A compact, fast, tool-servo system," and "A high-resolution, fast, toolservo system," each having different sensor requirements. Within these studies, two different CDS configurations (single- and differential- CDS) were examined, and a novel multiplexing technique was investigated as a possible solution to enhance fundamental digital resolution. Fundamental issues and performance factors for CDSs were observed and analyzed, and several techniques were developed to overcome those problems. Lastly, constructive suggestions addressing the next generation capacitive sensor to provide longer-range, higher-resolution, -accuracy, and bandwidth are presented.

Book Description
The measurement of the exact state of an actuator is necessary to use it reliably in any situation especially in interaction with humans. Traditional rigid encoders would not be very useful since they limit the functionality of the actuator and hence a system of stretchable optic-fibres is proposed as a sensing mechanism to determine the location of the bending axis and the exact rotation achieved along it. Stretchable fiber optic is constrained in a flexo-structure to increase sensitivity in certain sections and achieve two sensing sections with different range of operations. Various fiber configurations are tested to optimise the linearity, sensitivity, range of operation and resolution in a simple bending test of a flexo-structure with a single fiber optic sensor. It was observed that increased sensitivity is observed for the constrained (stick) section compared to a free (slip) section of fiber. Two potential sensors (TOF and light amplitude modulation based) are created and calibrated for angle measurement. This system could be used in on-board, non-hysteretic, non-electric, soft sensing in robots or devices with limited sensing capabilities like a soft prosthetic glove. The application of this system is demonstrated in a small glove to measure the bending at two joint locations.

Book Description
This book describes how engineers can make optimum use of the two industry standard analysis/design tools, SystemC and SystemC-AMS. The authors use a system-level design approach, emphasizing how SystemC and SystemC-AMS features can be exploited most effectively to analyze/understand a given electronic system and explore the design space. The approach taken by this book enables system engineers to concentrate on only those SystemC/SystemC-AMS features that apply to their particular problem, leading to more efficient design. The presentation includes numerous, realistic and complete examples, which are graded in levels of difficulty to illustrate how a variety of systems can be analyzed with these tools.
